Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience in a broad range of financial accounting and reporting is required).
  • A minimum of 5 years of a broad range of financial accounting and budget experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to deal with the public.
  • Attention to detail and extreme accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and experience in applying accounting principles and procedures.
  • Extensive experience of financial systems, including accounts payable, general ledger, payroll and others.
  • Proficiency in common spreadsheet applications; word processing software, report writing and data base management systems.
  • A strong work ethic and adherence to departmental and organizational financial and operational ethical standards.
  • Proven ability to work as a team member in a fast-paced financial environment.
  • Positive, cooperative attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the general ledger, performs financial reporting functions, reconciles general ledger accounts, prepares and compiles budget data and financial analysis for all Massachusetts Teachers Association entities.
  • Calculates, records and enters general ledger journal entries.
  • Coordinates monthly general ledger, accounts payable and payroll closings.
  • Maintains the general ledger and reconciles general ledger accounts.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements, versus budget, including financial reporting packages for the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Management.
  • Prepares, maintains and analyzes summarization and reporting of the organization's budget; including correspondence to division or department heads, as required.
  • Post cash transactions to the general ledger throughout each month.
  • Deposit miscellaneous checks (non-membership), cash receipts, including STD/LTD /PFML and Misc. A/R payments and maintain supporting schedules.
  • Perform month-end close duties, calculate and record general ledger journal entries and prepare accounting schedules.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements versus budget, including financial reporting packages for the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Management.
  • Prepare timely and accurate internal financial reports and analyses.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget by performing various trend and related analyses and maintaining the budget files.
  • Compile and review bank balances and transactions to forecast cash accurately.
  • Attend budget committee meetings, Executive Committee meetings and Board meetings, as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality of Association records.
  • Work cross-functionally with other departments by providing training as needed.
  • Prepare and distribute periodic custom cross-functional reporting as requested.
  • Perform annual year-end accounting close and financial reporting duties, such as intercompany elimination entries, functional expense reporting, various financial analyses, and footnote preparation and analysis.
  • Assist with the financial audit by reviewing and updating process documentation, coordinating with other divisions on audit requests, providing required reports, analyses, and other requested support to external auditors.
  • Assist with supporting other required external audits, including the pension plan and 401(k) audits.
  • Provide support and assist with the federal and state tax returns.
  • Maintenance and documentation of chart of accounts and reporting tools.
  • Address and research budget or other financial related inquiries from management.
  • Perform invoicing and collection activities relating to receivables from external parties, such as reimbursements, grants receivable, and external printing and mailing invoices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
