About The Position

Koniag IT Systems, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Financial Operations Engineer (also described as an AWS FinOps Engineer) to support KITS and its government customer. This is a remote, hands-on position focused on analyzing, forecasting, and optimizing AWS cloud spend. The role includes analyzing AWS usage and costs, identifying and resolving waste, managing cloud purchasing commitments, developing financial reporting and forecasts, detecting and investigating cost anomalies, and improving cost allocation. The engineer will automate cost controls, advise engineering teams on cost-efficient architectures, and mature FinOps practices through KPIs, stakeholder reviews, training, and documentation. The position requires translating technical usage into financial insights and balancing cost efficiency with performance, reliability, security, and delivery speed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience with machine learning and statistical modeling.
  • Deep understanding of AWS pricing and billing models and the cost drivers of EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, data transfer, and other core services.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cost tools such as Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), and Budgets, and at least one FinOps platform or BI tool.
  • Experience with Terraform or CloudFormation and scripting for automation using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Ability to translate technical usage into financial insight and communicate with engineers and finance leaders.
  • Working knowledge of FinOps principles and the Inform, Optimize, Operate lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of AWS services, pricing models, and cost management tools.
  • Analytical and data-driven approach, with strong financial modeling instincts.
  • Ability to influence without authority and build trust with engineering and finance stakeholders.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain the meaning behind numbers.
  • Ability to balance cost efficiency with reliability, performance, and delivery speed.
  • Curiosity, self-direction, and comfort operating in ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • FinOps Certified Practitioner or higher and/or AWS certification such as Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, or DevOps Engineer.
  • Familiarity with the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS).
  • Experience with Kubernetes cost allocation and optimization, including EKS and Kubecost, and with serverless and container architectures.
  • Experience with multi-account governance at scale and multi-cloud cost management across Azure or GCP.
  • SQL and data-analysis skills, such as using Athena with CUR data, and experience building financial or forecasting models.
  • Experience incorporating cost awareness into DevOps or CI/CD workflows and working in Agile/Scrum teams.
  • Background establishing or maturing a FinOps practice, including executive reporting and unit-economics metrics.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and monitor AWS usage and costs using AWS cost tools and third-party FinOps platforms.
  • Identify idle, orphaned, and overprovisioned cloud resources and quantify potential savings.
  • Recommend and manage Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and Spot usage; track coverage and utilization.
  • Create and maintain dashboards, executive summaries, and showback or chargeback reporting.
  • Forecast cloud costs, support budgeting and variance analysis, and explain spending changes to stakeholders.
  • Configure cost anomaly detection and alerting, and investigate and remediate unexpected spending.
  • Design and enforce tagging standards and AWS account structures to allocate costs to teams, products, or customers.
  • Automate rightsizing, scheduling, tag compliance, and budget guardrails using infrastructure-as-code and scripting; integrate cost checks into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Advise engineering teams on cost-efficient architecture, including Kubernetes/EKS, containers, and serverless services.
