About The Position

Lake Behavioral Hospital is seeking a Financial Counselor Supervisor for its freestanding psychiatric hospital. The supervisor verifies benefits and eligibility for admissions and serves as a liaison among the facility, insurance companies, patients, and families to address outstanding balances and support timely collections. The role includes self-pay collections for inpatient and outpatient services, working with managed care contracts and government intermediaries, and maintaining current knowledge of regulatory requirements for accurate reimbursement. The supervisor directly oversees staff, trains new hires, provides continuing education, and tracks and reports departmental tasks. Responsibilities also include coordinating admissions and insurance verification, financial counseling and payment arrangements, Medicaid and charity care assistance, account documentation, patient and department coordination, cash reporting, portal maintenance, and support for department operations and quality improvement. The position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and offers $25.00–$27.00 per hour plus a monthly bonus opportunity.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent required.
At least 2 years of experience in the admission process and collections procedures.
Working knowledge of managed care.
Ability to interpret insurance coverage plans, copayments, deductible schedules, and payment plans.
Working knowledge of computers and business software programs.

Nice To Haves

College degree preferred.
One year of supervisory or management experience preferred.
Working knowledge of Excel preferred.

Responsibilities

Verify insurance benefits and eligibility for all admissions.
Serve as a liaison between the facility, insurance companies, patients, and families to address outstanding balances and support timely collections.
Manage self-pay collections for inpatient and outpatient services.
Provide direct supervision of staff, train new hires, and provide continuing education.
Report and track daily tasks for the financial counselors department.
Review and update patient demographics in Med-Host or similar systems.
Ensure pre-admission and admission paperwork is completed accurately and on time; verify coverage and eligibility, obtain required signatures, assign financial classes, and resolve registration discrepancies.
Conduct financial interviews within 48 hours of admission, determine deposits and patient financial obligations, establish payment plans, and coordinate arrangements before or upon discharge.
Complete admission folders and benefit verification within required deadlines; maintain account records, document financial and legal issues, and schedule follow-ups.
Assist patients with Medicaid applications, evaluate and communicate charity care determinations, collect self-pay balances, and monitor payment plans through calls and written correspondence.
Coordinate benefits and resolve issues with patients, families, facility management, case management, Intake, HIM, and the business office, including support for transitions to PHP, IOP, and other levels of care.
Serve as the primary contact for the BOM and CFO, prioritize workflow, ensure deadlines are met, complete daily cash reports, maintain intake portals, and support department operations.
Register and train staff on portals and Med-Host as needed.
Follow facility and departmental policies, maintain patient and employee confidentiality, attend required training, and support quality improvement initiatives.
