Financial Controller

Northwest AmbulanceEverett, WA
Onsite

About The Position

NW Ambulance is a growing EMS provider delivering critical transport services across multiple locations in the Puget Sound region. We operate in a high-volume, operationally complex environment with outsourced billing and a strong focus on reliability, compliance, and financial performance. This is not a desk-bound accounting role. Success here requires genuine partnership with operations leadership and active engagement with the realities of a 24/7 EMS organization. We're looking for a Controller to lead our accounting function, ensure financial accuracy, and provide clear visibility into company performance. You'll serve as a strategic financial partner to executive leadership and operations — guiding decisions through accurate reporting, operational insight, and financial forecasting. This role is empowered to improve processes, strengthen controls, and modernize our financial reporting systems. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, operationally disciplined, and comfortable in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of accounting experience
  • Strong background in financial reporting, month-end close, and reconciliations
  • Experience working with or overseeing third-party billing or revenue cycle
  • Familiarity with ADP Workforce Now or equivalent payroll platform
  • Knowledge of Washington State compliance: WA PFML, L&I, and cares fund

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or equivalent experience
  • Background in healthcare, EMS, or similar high-volume operations
  • Experience in multi-location businesses
  • Fleet and asset accounting experience
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Enterprise; familiarity with Sage, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics also valued
  • Familiarity with EMS or medical transport economics

Responsibilities

  • Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close (target: <15 days). Prepare accurate P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reports that are audit-ready.
  • Reconcile third-party billing reports against actual cash receipts. Monitor collection rates, adjustments, write-offs, and billing fees. Evaluate and make recommendations on the third-party billing relationship.
  • Monitor daily/weekly cash position; forecast short- and long-term needs; ensure liquidity for payroll, operations, and growth.
  • Oversee accounting for our ambulance fleet and medical equipment, including depreciation schedules and capital expenditure planning.
  • Build reporting that connects operational metrics (units, runs, staffing) to financial outcomes. Analyze labor costs, unit utilization, and departmental margins.
  • Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, and payroll accounting via ADP Workforce Now and QuickBooks Enterprise. Manage WA PFML, L&I, and cares fund compliance.
  • Establish strong financial controls and improve systems and reporting processes.
  • Manage and develop accounting staff; communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Holiday pay
  • 401(k)-retirement plan with an employer match of up to 5%
  • Paid time off
