About The Position

San Francisco Financial Counseling is the flagship program of San Francisco's Economic Justice Center (EJC), a city-run initiative housed within the Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector. The EJC brings together the Office of Financial Empowerment and the Financial Justice Project to convene, innovate, and advocate for policies and programs that strengthen the economic security and mobility of low-income San Franciscans. In partnership with the EJC, Balance delivers San Francisco Financial Coaching, providing free, confidential, one-on-one financial counseling to individuals who live, work, or receive services in San Francisco. Integrated into social service delivery, workforce development, and public housing, this program supports residents in opening safe and affordable bank accounts, building credit, reducing debt, and increasing savings. Through strong collaborations with the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, Human Services Agency, San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco Public Library, Bayview community partners, and other sites, San Francisco Financial Coaching has served over 3,500 low-income San Franciscans, helping them improve housing stability, employment outcomes, and overall financial health. In this position you will be responsible for conducting in-person and online financial education workshops, representing Balance at community meetings, and working with clients in-person or by phone to help establish a budget, set goals to meet their financial objectives and assist rental participants with DAHLIA application assistance. This role will also expand to rental counseling once a HUD Housing Counselor certification is completed.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college
  • Experience in one or more of the following: financial services, financial planning, social work, community organizing, teaching or other related fields
  • Experience in community service such as volunteering, coaching or mentoring
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Ability to use a client management database

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college
  • One to two years related experience and/or training (financial services, financial counseling, banking, credit and collection)
  • Experience working with clients from extremely low-income communities

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-person and online financial education workshops.
  • Represent Balance at community meetings.
  • Work with clients in-person or by phone to help establish a budget.
  • Set goals to meet their financial objectives.
  • Assist rental participants with DAHLIA application assistance.
  • Expand to rental counseling once a HUD Housing Counselor certification is completed.
  • Work with clients from various socioeconomic backgrounds within the communities where they live and work.
  • Provide one-on-one financial coaching sessions to assess clients' needs and develop specific strategies to resolve past and present financial concerns.
  • Create personalized action plans that support clients' financial goals and provide continuing encouragement to clients to successfully accomplish their established plans.
  • Schedule appointments for clients, confirm daily appointments, and reschedule appointments as necessary.
  • Conduct scheduled workshops for groups of clients on various financial topics.
  • Collect, track and report required data using client management database.
  • Perform elements of on-going casework as needed to provide service and problem-solving assistance for client inquiries and account management.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other social supportive services (Ex. public benefits, legal services, tax preparation).
  • Successfully complete and pass the required training and participate in ongoing professional development.
