About The Position

The Finance Officer will support the Finance Department in managing day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reporting. The role provides practical exposure to non-profit financial management, helping ensure accurate and timely financial records, compliance with donor and regulatory requirements, and informed decision-decision-making by program managers. This opportunity is designed to build the candidate's skills in accounting, reporting, and financial analysis while contributing to the organization’s mission.

Requirements

  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs eligibility (see below).
  • Post-secondary education; (BA, BS, or Com degree program or related field with an accredited educational institution; students welcome)
  • Good Excel skills/knowledge of accounting concepts
  • Satisfactory analytical, data gathering and IT skills
  • A self-starter who is results-oriented, self-motivated and organized
  • Ability to maintain detailed fiscal records and files
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Process vendor invoices and staff reimbursements in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with coding expenses to appropriate programs and funding sources.
  • Maintain AP files and ensure supporting documentation comply with internal controls and funding requirements.
  • Prepare and issue invoices for funding partners and program activities.
  • Record and reconcile incoming payments and donations.
  • Prepare AR summaries and follow up on outstanding receivables.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial reports, comparing actuals vs. budget, and identifying variances.
  • Support program managers with financial data and insights for effective budget utilization.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual budgets and program forecasts.
  • Perform journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Support the Finance Manager with month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Assist with statutory and tax-related reporting, including HST/GST refunds and T3010 charity filing.
  • Track funding and expenditure to ensure compliance with donor and program requirements.
  • Assist in preparing financial information for funding proposals and reports.
  • Help prepare schedules and documentation for annual and special audits.
  • Maintain accurate and organized financial records.
  • Perform other finance-related duties as assigned.
