Directeur.trice Finance / Finance Director

McGill St LaurentMontreal, QC

About The Position

McGill St-Laurent is a Montreal-based commodities and energy trading firm operating across 20+ legal entities across Canada, United States and Europe. Since 2012, we have grown through an entrepreneurial culture that values initiative, execution, and rigorous financial thinking. We are now in an accelerated growth phase — M&A strategy, ambitious gross margin targets, and a rapidly expanding energy division — and we are building the finance team to match. We are looking for a Finance Director to sit at the heart of that build. This is an operational and leadership role: you will own the day-to-day functioning of a finance team of approximately 10 people, drive our month-end close transformation, and be the right hand of the VP Finance as we scale.

Requirements

  • CPA designation required
  • 8+ years of progressive finance experience, including 3+ years leading a team
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems — NetSuite experience is a strong asset
  • Deep understanding of internal controls, month-end close processes, and multi-entity consolidation
  • Experience in a trading, commodities, or multi-entity environment is an asset
  • AI-forward: you actively use AI tools in your own work and have pushed your team to do the same — not as an experiment but as a genuine productivity lever
  • Strong data mindset and Excel skills — you think in structured datasets, not spreadsheet art; SQL or BI tools (Tableau, Power BI) are an asset
  • Bilingual (French and English) — required

Nice To Haves

  • A builder, not just an operator — you see structural problems and fix them, you don't just manage around them
  • A strong people manager who gives direct feedback, holds performance standards, and develops talent
  • Genuinely excited by technology — you have lived through an ERP implementation and know how to drive adoption
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and rapid change in a fast-growing entrepreneurial environment
  • Bilingual and a clear communicator — able to translate financial complexity for traders, operators, and leadership
  • Someone who sets the tone: high standards, structured thinking, and no tolerance for recurring errors

Responsibilities

  • Own the full operational performance of the finance team — month-end close, AP/AR, treasury controls, payroll, and compliance across all entities
  • Drive the finance team's transformation agenda: 5-day close, shared services model, and full NetSuite adoption across all entities
  • Manage, develop, and performance-manage a team of ~10, including senior accounting staff across operational finance, AP/AR, treasury, and compliance
  • Ensure rigorous internal controls and segregation of duties across all entities — identify gaps, remediate risks, and build the control matrix
  • Partner with the VP Finance on budgeting, rolling forecasts, and monthly performance analysis versus budget
  • Act as the primary liaison with external auditors and drive tax strategy across Canadian and US entities — structuring decisions, intercompany transactions, and acquisition integration with a view to optimizing the overall tax position
  • Lead the onboarding of acquired entities into the finance reporting structure
  • Drive continuous process improvement using AI and automation — from AP processing to month-end workflows and financial reporting; be the person who brings new tools to the team and gets them adopted
  • Establish clear ownership, deadlines, and accountability for every task across the team

Benefits

  • Full group insurance
  • Opportunity to contribute to an RRSP program
  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience
  • A vacation policy upon arrival
  • A public transit incentive program
  • A beautiful office in Montreal with a gym, golf simulator, lounge, locker rooms and showers
