About The Position

This internship opportunity is for individuals pursuing a degree in business, finance, accounting, data analytics, or a related field who are eager to gain hands-on experience modernizing financial operations in a mission-driven environment. The Financial Strategy & Operations Group plays a critical role in ensuring financial integrity, transparency, and operational excellence across APL. Interns will contribute to initiatives focused on enhancing financial data quality, modernizing reporting processes, and strengthening analytics capabilities that support executive decision-making and compliance. This role is designed to help evolve how financial information is structured, analyzed, and delivered across the organization.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with structured data and financial systems.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel (e.g., formulas, pivot tables, data analysis features).
  • Adaptable, intellectually curious, and eager to learn in a dynamic environment.
  • U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status is required, subject to applicable laws, to access APL’s facilities and networks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data analytics or data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, Python, SQL, or similar platforms).
  • Exposure to financial systems such as Oracle or other ERP platforms.
  • Experience working with large datasets and building structured reports or dashboards.
  • Interest in financial systems modernization, automation, or process improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Support the modernization of financial and accounting reporting across a variety of APL business functions.
  • Assist in preparing, recording, and validating financial transactions within APL business applications while helping improve data consistency, transparency, and reporting efficiency.
  • Analyze financial data sets to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for process optimization.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of dashboards, reporting tools, and data visualization products to improve stakeholder insights.
  • Support reconciliation activities and payment processing while identifying opportunities to automate and streamline workflows.
  • Prepare documentation to support internal audits and external reviews, including DCAA and other regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to investigate and resolve data discrepancies and strengthen internal controls.
  • Evaluate current financial processes and recommend improvements that enhance accuracy, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Assist with JHU data requests and enterprise-level reporting initiatives.
