About The Position

Join the Core OS team in Paris that develops and maintains the File Provider framework, APIs, and daemons used by cloud file services on Apple platforms. The team owns the sync engine, which detects, tracks, and applies changes in both directions between a device’s local filesystem and remote services. Its central challenge is reconciling two independently changing trees by planning and executing dependent operations in an order that preserves folder structure through concurrent edits, crashes, and conflicts. The system handles highly bursty workloads involving millions of files while operating within the memory, CPU, battery, and storage constraints of iPhone and iPad. The role is suited to a systems engineer who cares deeply about correctness, performance, and resource efficiency; prior sync experience is not required. Day to day, you will design, implement, test, and debug features, quality safeguards, and performance improvements. You will begin with scoped assignments paired with experienced teammates, then build autonomy and ownership. You will collaborate with engineering teams worldwide across the kernel-to-cloud stack, Apple operating systems and services, and external developers adopting the APIs.

Requirements

  • Solid programming skills in a systems language such as C, C++, Objective-C, or Swift.
  • Working understanding of operating system fundamentals, including processes, concurrency, memory, and file I/O.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug methodically.
  • Clear written and verbal communication in English, and a collaborative approach to working across teams.
  • Curiosity about how systems work beneath their abstractions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience reasoning about stateful systems that must remain correct across crashes, restarts, partial failures, or concurrent mutation.
  • Exposure to distributed systems concepts such as eventual consistency, change tracking, reconciliation, and conflict resolution.
  • Familiarity with filesystems, including APFS, or filesystem-adjacent system components.
  • Experience with performance, memory, or energy profiling.
  • Experience maintaining an API or library that other developers depend on.
  • Experience with agentic coding.
  • Contributions to a large, long-lived codebase.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and debug new features for the sync engine.
  • Develop quality safeguards to help ensure data is not lost.
  • Improve system performance and resource efficiency.
  • Help reconcile local filesystem changes with remote-service changes by planning and applying dependent operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams across the operating systems and services stack and with external developers adopting the APIs.
