Filament Winding Technician III

Relativity Space•Long Beach, CA

About The Position

The Filament Winding Technician III supports the Stage Manufacturing team, which builds Terran R’s primary structures. The role sets up and operates multi-axis filament winding machines to produce composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs). It includes preparing resin and hardener mixes to specification; managing resin baths, fiber tensioning, and material handling for carbon, glass, and aramid fibers; and helping develop and refine winding programs and machine offsets based on engineering drawings and process specifications. The technician performs in-process inspections and measurements, records results in work instructions and travelers, identifies bottlenecks and winding defects, and supports troubleshooting and root-cause solutions with engineering. The role also trains and mentors less experienced technicians in winding, resin preparation, and cure processes.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of hands-on filament winding experience on composite pressure vessels or cylinders; wet winding is preferred.
  • Experience setting up and operating multi-spindle filament winding machines, including axis offsets.
  • Working knowledge of carbon, glass, and aramid fiber systems and epoxy resin/hardener mixing.
  • Ability to use and read precision measuring tools, including pi-tape, calipers, height gauges, and tension meters.
  • Experience training or mentoring other technicians.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience winding cylinders for aerospace, defense, DOT/compressed gas (CNG, hydrogen), or life-support applications.
  • Experience with vacuum bag, gel, and cure processes.
  • Lifting and rigging experience or forklift operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
