Filament Winding Technician III

Relativity Space•Long Beach, CA
•$34 - $52

About The Position

The Filament Winding Technician III is part of Relativity Space’s Stage Manufacturing team, which builds Terran R’s primary structures. The role sets up and operates multi-axis filament winding machines to manufacture composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for Terran R. It prepares resin and hardener mixes to specification and manages resin baths, fiber tensioning, and handling of carbon, glass, and aramid fibers. The technician helps develop and refine winding programs and machine offsets using engineering drawings and process specifications. The role also performs in-process inspections and measurements, records results in work instructions and travelers, identifies bottlenecks and defects, and supports troubleshooting and root-cause solutions with engineering. It includes training and mentoring less experienced technicians on winding, resin preparation, and cure processes.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of hands-on filament winding experience on composite pressure vessels or cylinders; wet winding is preferred.
  • Experience setting up and operating multi-spindle filament winding machines, such as Entech or McClean Anderson, including axis offsets.
  • Working knowledge of carbon, glass, and aramid fiber systems and epoxy resin/hardener mixing.
  • Ability to use and read precision measuring tools, including pi-tape, calipers, height gauge, and tension meters.
  • Experience training or mentoring other technicians.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience winding cylinders for aerospace, defense, DOT/compressed gas (CNG, hydrogen), or life-support applications.
  • Experience with vacuum bag, gel, and cure processes.
  • Lifting and rigging experience or forklift operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
