About The Position

Field System Specialists prepare work authorization documents for technicians and other support personnel in Imagining, Voice, Telephone, Transmissions, Cable, Timing, and Wire; such as detailed work instructions, specifications, engineering drawings and schematics, equipment and materials needed, estimated labor hours, identifying hazards, test equipment, and support equipment. This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union.

Requirements

  • Associate of Science or Technical Trade School in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Six (6) years related experience or successful completion of a State or Military approved bona fide work-related apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor.
  • Requires extensive knowledge in specialized functions of communications systems
  • A wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of communications systems and their practical application to complex problems and situations ordinarily encountered.
  • Requires the ability to analyze issues and resolve technical problems while collaborating with design engineers, technicians, and customers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and the ability to operate and use a vast array of communication test equipment. Errors in work made at this level may require significant expenditures to resolve.
  • Work at this level requires minimal supervision. Complete and maintain company and customer certification/training requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets engineering, project management plans, and manufacturers' documents, manuals, catalogs, drawings, and schematics, and related technical and administrative publications needed to develop work authorization documents (i.e., Maximo work orders, trouble tickets, temporary test configuration documents), including work sequences, methods, and procedures related to the fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance of communication systems and equipment.
  • Analyze work by performing field surveys such as reviewing and observing work area, making notes, drawing sketches, taking photographs, creating parts lists, equipment configuration, and collaborating with engineering, system planners, technicians, and other support personnel to facilitate the preparation of work authorization documents.
  • Writes work orders and reviews work orders with the customer, technicians, engineering, and other support personnel to clarify work requirements.
  • As needed, may participate in meetings and technical discussions as necessary to ensure a complete understanding of system work requirements.
  • Analyzes schedule dates and material/parts delivery dates for developing work schedules and project competition dates and projected labor hours needed to complete work assignments/projects.
  • Writes technical descriptions specifying material qualities, parts lists, and properties, utilizing knowledge of material standards and communications equipment and materials. Working with Logistics generates a Material Request (MR) for the procurement of parts and materials needed.
  • Organizes material and completes work authorization assignments according to department standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Maintains records and files of work and revisions, may select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate that work is configured correctly and verified for closing out work authorization documentation.
  • Communicates with technicians, engineers, and customers, etc. in troubleshooting issues or problems as they occur.
  • Provides clarification of work instructions to others.
  • May require instructing the workforce on the use of test equipment.
  • Support missions by assisting technicians in the field.
  • Using test equipment, manufacturer manuals, internal documentation, reference and operating procedures, and schematics, troubleshoot and isolate problems.
  • Provide, update, and maintain all required documentation, reports, and logs, etc., manually or in electronic databases.
  • Enter, update, ensure accuracy, and maintain document control and configuration systems used to track and store documents.
  • Make recommendations to improve work quality, efficiencies, and productivity.
  • Adhere to OSHA, NASA, Company, and customer safety requirements.
  • May assist in training others.
