Requirements

  • Documented work experience in the criminal justice field as a law-enforcement officer or jailor.
  • Demonstrated experience with adult learning theory.
  • Knowledge of Virginia’s criminal justice system.
  • A strong work ethic, exceptional customer service skills, and a positive attitude.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A valid Virginia Driver’s license and excellent driving record.
  • Ability to think strategically and cross culturally and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
  • Ability to articulate, both orally and in written form, clear and concise program objectives and goals and summarize achievements of programs in reports and other documents as requested.
  • Documented experience working as an active, contributing team member, as well as an independent and self-motivated employee.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments, changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented significant law enforcement/criminal justice experience in Virginia.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a Virginia criminal justice academy.
  • Experience and knowledge of law enforcement training principles and concepts.
  • Significant knowledge of the laws and regulatory requirements for criminal justice professionals in Virginia.
  • DCJS instructor certification(s) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience using the Training and Certification Electronic Records (TRACER) system.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor quality control of criminal justice mandated training, including ensuring compliance with applicable rules, policy and guidelines; monitoring and inspecting records; conducting periodic audits; running training delinquency lists for assigned departments and initiate steps necessary to bring training into compliance; and monitoring classroom and performance-based training at training academies within the Southwest region.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Department and law enforcement and criminal justice academies in the Northern Virginia region, including meeting with regional academy staff and criminal justice agencies to discuss training and compliance issues; and setting up trainer meetings quarterly to discuss training and compliance matters with constituents.
  • Review curriculums, instructorship applications, and extension requests and process, as appropriate.
  • Conduct criminal justice academy certification/re-certification audits, including providing interim academy recertifications, and identifying and scheduling academy recertification audits.
  • Administer law enforcement certification exams.
  • Represent the Department and its policies to constituents, including providing on-site technical assistance in all aspects of agency activities crossing division boundaries; interpreting laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines and responding to constituent requests for service and/or assistance in a timely manner; and serve as a conduit for communication between the Department and constituents and constituent groups.
