About The Position

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington is hiring a full-time Field Crew Lead (Research Aide 2) for the summer. This role is part of research projects in the forests of the Cascade Mountains, focusing on post-fire vegetation and fuels measurements in recently burned or treated forests. The position involves collaborations with various organizations including the Washington DNR, Tulalip Tribes, UW Climate Impacts Group, US Forest Service, and National Park Service. The ideal candidate will have experience in forest and fire ecology, be adaptable, detail-oriented, able to follow protocols, enjoy outdoor teamwork in variable conditions, and be able to live cooperatively with others. The work acknowledges the location on Indigenous homelands and the history of dispossession and resilience of Indigenous peoples.

  • Willingness to lodge in mobile, group campsite settings under rugged outdoor conditions

Responsibilities

  • Lead field assistants collecting data on forest structure and composition.
  • Navigate variable terrain to forest plots using maps and GPS.
  • Identify plant species.
  • Tag, measure, and map trees.
  • Assess tree mortality and regeneration.
  • Measure fuels and carbon.
