About The Position

The Field Applications Scientist (FAS) is a key member of Miltenyi’s Commercial Sales team, playing a central role in customer success across flow cytometry, imaging, and clinical cell and gene therapy manufacturing platforms. The FAS plays a key role in customer success by bridging pre-sales and post-sales activities across our clinical and research instrument portfolios. Additionally, the FAS contributes to product adoption by understanding their customer’s workflows and recommending Miltenyi solutions when appropriate. The FAS manages a diverse customer base within an assigned territory, collaborating closely with Sales, Technical Support, Product Management, and Service to ensure a seamless and high-quality customer experience. The role requires the ability to work effectively in a matrix organization with multiple teams supporting the same territory, while balancing independent responsibility and proactive problem-solving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field (Biology, Immunology, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline) is required
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in biological sciences, cellular therapy, flow cytometry, microscopy/spatial biology, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following domains is required: cellular therapy/cell and gene therapy, flow cytometry, or microscopy/spatial biology.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory instrumentation, data analysis, and workflow optimization within life science applications.
  • Strong knowledge of cellular therapy and related technologies, and familiarity with immunology, molecular biology, flow cytometry, and/or microscopy/spatial biology applications.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and to act as a trusted advisor.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically about customer needs, territory priorities, and business objectives.
  • Proven ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with cross-functional internal teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned territory (up to 70%, depending on business needs).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurance/insurability, as required for field-based work.

Nice To Haves

  • Customer-facing experience in field applications, technical support, or comparable roles is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in clinical or regulated environments is a plus where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with sales team members to understand customer requirements and design appropriate technical solutions.
  • Perform onsite and virtual product demonstrations for instruments and applications, including seminars, workshops, and “lunch and learn” sessions.
  • Provide technical presentations to support evaluation, selection, and adoption of Miltenyi instruments, reagents, and consumables.
  • Contribute to the sales process by identifying applications that fit customer workflows and recommending appropriate Miltenyi products and configurations.
  • Act as the primary field technical support for assigned instrument portfolios, providing onsite installation support and initial end-user training.
  • Conduct retraining and advanced applications training to ensure optimal use of CliniMACS instruments, MACSQuant instruments, Imaging instruments, and related systems in customer workflows.
  • Develop and deliver application-specific training content and workshops tailored to clinical and/or research needs.
  • Provide timely responses to customer technical inquiries, troubleshooting issues remotely and onsite, in collaboration with Technical Support, Field Service Engineers, and other internal teams.
  • Support resolution of complex technical problems, including coordination of clinical complaints and communication of corrective actions when needed.
  • Distribute and explain software release notes, advising customers on upgrade feasibility, potential impact on workflows, and any required corrective actions.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with customers, acting as a trusted technical advisor and resource for cellular therapy, flow cytometry, imaging, and related applications.
  • Work collaboratively in shared accounts to support the sale of reagents, kits, antibodies, and other consumables through joint workdays and coordinated account planning with local sales specialists.
  • Identify opportunities for upselling and cross-selling additional instruments, software, and consumables based on customer needs, utilization patterns, and emerging applications.
  • Gather and communicate customer feedback on product performance, usability, and emerging requirements to internal stakeholders for continuous improvement.
  • Plan and manage time and territory coverage to ensure appropriate support for new installations, existing customers, and sales opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Technical Support team to provide in-field customer follow-up after a support request or complaint filing as needed.
  • Partner with marketing, product management, and other internal teams to support regional events, workshops, and product launches as needed.
  • Identify potential sales leads across portfolios and facilitate hand-off to the appropriate colleague.
