About The Position

Under the direction of the Supervisor-SpringNet Network OSP, installations, repairs, and maintenances of fiber optic and other cable systems—in both overhead and underground environments—to accommodate company needs and requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, fiber optic—both strand and lashed and self-supporting construction—and metallic cable, splice cases, risers and conduit sweeps, building entries, conduit, and fiber termination panels. This position requires proficiency with the following equipment; fiber optic fusion splicer, OTDRs, OLTS, fiber characterization modules, live fiber identifiers, bucket trucks, cable lashing machines, block and tackle, dynamometers, hydraulic reel trailers, cable pulling devices, and power tools.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • One year of fiber optic splicing/testing experience with a fiber optic splicing (BICSI or comparable) certification is required.
  • OR One year of communication system installation—in both overhead and underground applications— and pole climbing certification is required.
  • Must obtain fiber optic splicing (BICSI or comparable) and pole climbing certification within twelve months.
  • Must have a valid Missouri CDL, Class A including air brakes, OR The ability to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within six weeks of employment AND The ability to obtain a CDL, Class A including airbrakes within six months of employment.
  • Technical competence in data networks personal computer systems and operate a computer in a field environment.
  • Ability to: Work independently, unsupervised, or in a team and deal effectively with personnel and the general public.
  • Meet deadlines and schedule work for timely completion.
  • Properly set up work zones with and around traffic.
  • Show good judgment in abilities and conversation.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems.
  • Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy and quality.
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
  • A broad technical background and a working knowledge of telecommunications equipment.
  • A broad knowledge of fiber-to-the-X design, installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity of the safety clearance requirements of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
  • Expertise with the following fiber equipment: fiber optic fusion splicer, OTDRs, OLTS, fiber characterization modules, and live fiber identifiers.
  • Expertise in operating bucket trucks, digger derrick, and excavators.
  • Expertise with cable lashing machines, block and tackle, dynamometers, hydraulic reel trailers, and cable pulling devices.
  • Dependable due to the nature of the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains fiber optic cable systems including, but not limited to, fiber optic splice cases, terminations and termination panels, cross boxes and other fiber optic cable system equipment.
  • Must be able to read technical documents and perform basic fiber optic splicing functions.
  • Installs overhead fiber optic cable—both self-supporting, and strand and lashed. Climbs poles and ladders to access aerial cable.
  • Installs fiber optic cable in conduit, raceway, buildings and other environments.
  • Uses excavating equipment to perform underground repairs including, but not limited to, pedestal, vaults, crosses boxes, and conduit.
  • Performs with fiber optic troubleshooting. Ability to use OTDR, power meter and source, and other testing and certification equipment.
  • Ability to use fusion splicing equipment.
  • Assists engineering team with new fiber optic cable system product evaluations.
  • Examines work for quality and conformance to installation and repair procedures.
  • Assists with the update of technical documentation as required. Accurately records fiber optic cable system field data and reports information to engineering team.
  • Must be able to work with 125, 250, 900, and 3000-micron diameter fiber strands. Must be able to distinguish each color of the EIA/TIA 598-C “Optical Fiber Cable Color Coding” standard or latest version. Must be able to distinguish color coding of wires or other materials as required in the day-to-day operation of the devices used in the network.
  • Required to be in the after-hours on-call rotation as determined by management.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.
