About The Position

The Old Red Medical Museum is seeking a motivated and reliable Federal Work-Study Student interested in UTMB’s history, museums, and behind-the-scenes work with unique collections. This role offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience with historical collections while contributing to museum operations, exhibition development, research initiatives, tours, and events.

Requirements

  • Must have a Federal Work Study Award and be enrolled in a UTMB degree program
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong initiative, attention to detail, and excellent time management

Nice To Haves

  • An interest in the history of medicine/Galveston’s history
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines

Responsibilities

  • Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the entries in the museum’s database.
  • Make recommendations (e.g. numbering, labeling and their physical organization) to improve the organization of the collections.
  • Undertake research (e.g. Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections, Moody Medical Library) to support and inform exhibition and project development. (guidance provided)
  • Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red.
  • Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors alike.
