About The Position

This position is for a Family Development Response (FDR) Social Worker with a 15-month term, serving the Langley, Mission, and Abbotsford areas, based in Abbotsford. The role involves providing culturally appropriate and responsive community-based services within the parameters of the BC Child, Family and Community Services Act and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI). The Social Worker will be the first point of contact for child protection reports and will collaborate with families, community members, Band Designates, Elders, and other supports in case planning and service delivery. Services will encompass Family Development Response, Protective and Voluntary Family Service, and Guardianship. The role requires participation in community events and ceremonies and an understanding of community protocols. The agency, Xyólheméylh, is a delegated Indigenous Children & Family Services Agency committed to strengthening Indigenous culture and identity, keeping families together, and reintegrating children with their families and extended families. They work holistically, focusing on the best interest of the family while keeping children at the center, ensuring children are connected to their family and community and their rights to heritage and identity are upheld.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree, Child and Youth Care Degree or a Social Sciences degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the human services field would be an asset.
  • A combination of related education in a human services field and experience may be accepted.
  • Must be delegated or able/willing to attend training for C6 delegation in the province of B.C.
  • Ability to practice standards set out in the Child Protection Response Policies, B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act, and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI) Manual
  • Awareness of the B.C. Benefits Act; B.C. Adoptions Act; B.C. Family Relations Act; Young Offenders Act; and other pertinent provincial and federal legislation
  • Ability to practice standards set out in Good Recording Guide
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous culture and how culture impacts in the development of individuals and communities; and Indigenous culture in general and history in particular
  • Understanding of cross-cultural issues as they affect children in care, foster parents, biological parents and communities of origins
  • Practical knowledge of federal, provincial and indigenous organizations mandated to provide health, counseling and child and family services
  • Strong understanding of agency policies and procedure manuals.
  • Computer literacy on databases, Microsoft Word, Excel and other computer software
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License (no restrictions)
  • Reliable transportation with adequate vehicle insurance
  • Criminal Records Check is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with and compliance with confidentiality expectations as outlined in the Agency’s Human Resources Policy Manual and other policies and operational manuals, AOPSI and the B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally appropriate and responsive, community-based services.

  • Support Communities in building preventative programming that strengthens the capacity and involvement of the Community in protecting, supporting, and planning for its children.
