About The Position

The Farrowing Lead is responsible for leading and developing the farrowing team, ensuring all production protocols and procedures are followed, and maximizing sow production and efficiencies. This role involves training employees in animal husbandry, daily task management to achieve production targets, and accurate completion of paperwork. The Farrowing Lead also plays a crucial role in maintaining effective communication with employees and farm management, ensuring adherence to biosecurity and safety protocols, managing ventilation systems, and overseeing facility maintenance. Marginal functions include other duties as assigned by farm management.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED Preferred
2+ Years Livestock Experience with High School Diploma Preferred
Completion of My Pipestone New Hire Courses (Introduction, Animal Welfare, Biosecurity, Employee Handbook, PQA, Safety)
Completion of Additional Position Related My Pipestone Assigned Training (Monthly Animal Welfare, Biosecurity and Safety Topics; Annual Safety Refresher Training)
Ability to work weekends
Must have reliable method of transportation to get to work
Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per day
Frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling
Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pull
Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 pounds
Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to move
Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as needed
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Must be able to print and/or write legibly

Responsibilities

Lead and develop farrowing team, including training employees on production protocols, animal husbandry, and paperwork accuracy.
Monitor employee performance against protocols to maximize sow production and efficiencies.
Develop area employees to provide specialized skills for smooth workflow.
Maximize daily department tasks to achieve production targets.
Complete area paperwork accurately and timely, and train employees in required production paperwork.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with area employees and farm management.
Utilize task sheets and time frames to maintain an organized workday and monitor task schedules.
Provide daily input to farm management on production, animal health, and employee issues.
Train farrowing employees on how their personal performance affects the organization's finances.
Ensure farrowing paperwork is completed accurately and on time, including work-related injury paperwork and accident investigations.
Daily recording of monitored production items.
Adhere to all biosecurity protocols, train farrowing staff, and monitor compliance.
Ensure farrowing area biosecurity audit deficiencies are corrected promptly.
Follow all safety procedures and guidelines, and teach farrowing area employees safety procedures.
Ensure all safety equipment is in place and utilized.
Learn and train employees on accident prevention measures for the farrowing area.
Consistently monitor animal welfare procedures in the farrowing area.
Monitor and ensure the farrowing area ventilation system is in good working order.
Regularly monitor the environment to achieve optimum comfort for the animals.
Train farrowing area employees to provide regular input to maintain optimum animal comfort.
Ensure the facility is maintained and well-kept.
Train and direct farrowing staff to complete routine maintenance daily.
Communicate non-routine repairs to farm management.
Train, direct, and monitor staff to keep the farrowing area clean and organized.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned by farm management.
