About The Position

The Farrowing Team Leader is responsible for overseeing all daily operations and activities within the farrowing department. This includes aspects of staff development and teaching, pig production, and accurate record collection. The role requires a thorough understanding and ability to perform all operational tasks within the farrowing department, serving as a critical link between the gestation and nursery segments of production.

Requirements

High school graduate.
Minimum of 2 years experience in a leadership or supervisory role in a modern pork production system.
A history of team approach is necessary.
Dependable, proven problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
Proven skills in effective communication and leadership.
Maintain a valid driver’s license.
Ability to stand and walk on concrete floors most of the day.
Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs and walking 10 feet.
Ability to lift live pigs weighing up to 20 pounds in a repetitive manner, for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to assist in moving dead animals, 400+ pounds.
Ability to handle (move by pushing or herding) adult pigs, 200-600 pounds.
Ability to kneel and bend at waist for long periods of time.
Ability to climb ladders and work in confined attic spaces.
Must maintain PQA & TQA certification.

Responsibilities

Supervises all aspects of the farrowing department.
Oversees personnel development and training, including aiding in recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating employees.
Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly work schedules.
Assists manager in preparing and updating job descriptions for team members.
Seeks assistance from the unit manager in motivating the team.
Oversees all areas of farrowing performance, including monitoring and coordinating the farrowing schedule.
Regulates environmental controls for all animals on site.
Manages feeding systems and monitors diets; oversees daily feeding and chores.
Ensures animal welfare and health needs are met.
Routinely checks and repairs facilities and equipment.
Communicates concerns and issues daily with the gestation team leader and sow unit manager to discuss farm flow.
Responsible for the quality of pigs weaned.
Ensures accurate farm records and works to prevent and correct errors.
Submits weekly reports to the manager, recapping weekly challenges and successes.
Works to keep PCM / FVC updated on issues.
Submits weekly production records to the Information Services Bureau.
Assists operations manager and veterinary consultants with planning short/long-term goals and understanding day-to-day farm issues.
Communicates with managers and the gestation department team leader regularly to plan pig flow and meet production goals.
Keeps abreast of concerns in other areas.
Sets cleaning schedules to maintain a clean, safe, and biosecure unit, following biosecurity protocols.
Works to provide a unit that is safe and efficient for both personnel and animals, ensuring overall welfare.
Meets regularly with the team for problem-solving.
Trains workers to become supervisors themselves.
Instructs staff on all aspects of farrowing production.
Ensures each team member understands job expectations and performance requirements.
Teaches staff to work as a team.
Seeks to learn and further develop leadership skills.
Develops personal goals and mission.
Presents a professional image of the farm and PCM.
