About The Position

Under the direction of the Dairy Operations Manager, this role assumes intermittent supervisory responsibility for Farm Coordinator 1 and Dairy Worker employees. The position involves managing diet records for tie-stall cows, performing experimental treatments on dairy cows, and assisting with research trials such as digestion, metabolism, and mastitis. Key duties include prepping cattle for trials, sampling milk, feed, and excreta, weighing and recording feed and milk amounts, maintaining records, weighing cattle, and maintaining specialized equipment for research trials. The role also includes administering rumen boluses, collecting various biological and feed samples, scheduling sampling, recording clinical observations, preparing sampling containers, and performing general dairy research duties like milking, feeding, cleaning, and assisting with herd health treatments. Additionally, this position assists with the supervision and training of Agricultural Technician 1 and dairy worker employees on the second shift, working in conjunction with the Lactating Herd Coordinator. Responsibilities include assisting with milking, feeding, bedding, manure handling, general animal care, estrus detection, artificial insemination, and health treatments, as well as maintaining associated equipment and safely moving cattle. The Farm Coordinator 2 will also assist research faculty and graduate students with various research trials and may be on call for emergencies. Daily chores are monitored and recorded using farm software like Excel or PCDART. The role may also involve hauling, loading, and unloading cattle in a stock trailer.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of relevant experience required.

  • Certification or vocational training may be preferred.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assume intermittent supervisory responsibility of Farm Coordinator 1 and Dairy Worker employees.
  • Manage current diet records for tie-stall cows.

  • Weigh cattle.
  • Maintain equipment specifically associated with digestion, metabolism, and mastitis trials.

  • Collect samples of feed, milk, blood, rumen fluid, and other materials.
  • Schedule sampling.
  • Record clinical observations such as body temperature, respiration rates, and lethargy scores.
  • Prepare sampling containers including those for DHIA samples.
  • Perform other duties related to dairy research including milking, feeding, cleaning, bedding livestock housing, and assisting veterinarian with herd health treatments.
  • Assist with the supervision and training of Agricultural Technician 1 and dairy worker employees on second shift.
  • Assist in milking, feeding, bedding, manure handling, and general animal care, including estrus detection, artificial insemination, and health treatments.
  • Assist with maintaining equipment associated with such duties.
  • Assist with humanely and safely moving cattle between pens, barns, and facilities.
  • Assist research faculty and graduate students conduct digestion, metabolism, mastitis, any other research trials.
  • Monitor and record daily chores using Excel, PCDART, or other farm software.
  • May be required to haul, load, and unload cattle in a stock trailer.
  • May be on call for emergency situations.
