Family Services Coordinator (Social Worker/Bereavement Counselor)

New England Donor Services•Providence, RI
•$38 - $39•Onsite

About The Position

The Family Services Coordinator (FSC) provides support and guidance to family members of trauma patients and discusses end-of-life decision options, including organ and tissue donation. This empathetic and skilled professional helps hospitals carry out collaborative donation processes so that potential donor families are offered the opportunity to donate. FSCs provide coverage across the NEDS service area through an on-call schedule and may conduct donation discussions by phone when appropriate. The FSC helps families understand and accept the diagnosis of death as described by the primary care physician, assesses a legal next of kin’s readiness to discuss donation when there is no donor designation, and advocates for donation while respecting cultural and religious beliefs. The role includes documenting approaches and authorizations, maintaining an individual authorization rate demonstrating best-practice skills, and providing initial follow-up to donor families after donation. The position requires substantial travel throughout New England, with travel by personal vehicle. Mileage and other reimbursements are available. The ideal candidate lives within one hour of Providence, Rhode Island. The schedule is 12 on-call shifts per month, each running from 0600 to 2400 (18 hours); remaining on-site past midnight may be required depending on case dynamics and clinical activity. During orientation, the schedule is approximately four shifts per month plus didactic training. A week of new-hire orientation at the Waltham office is also required. When not responding to a case, the coordinator participates in required meetings and training, checks email at least daily unless on planned benefit time, and completes assigned training within defined timelines.
