About The Position

The Program Director is responsible for the general administration, curriculum planning, recruitment, and teaching and supervision of the Family Medicine Residency Program. This role establishes the strategic direction of the Program and is responsible for its standards, quality, and reputation. The Program Director will support the integration of the FM Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services to enhance value and quality, promoting an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education. The Program Director will have an academic faculty appointment through the affiliate medical school, with the type of appointment dependent on experience and academic qualifications, including research and scholarly activities. This position requires dedicating at least 50% of professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Program.

Requirements

  • Three to five years of Family Medicine post-residency clinical experience.
  • Core faculty experience in an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of GME teaching/administrative experience as Program Director or Associate Program Director.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Active involvement in research and scholarship (publications, presentations, etc.).
  • Mentorship experience of residents and students in scholarship and development of scholarship programs.
  • Must dedicate no less than 50% (at least 20 hours per week) of professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Program.

Responsibilities

  • Assure residents are assigned appropriate clinical responsibilities, are properly supervised, and provide safe and effective patient care.
  • Develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with ACGME requirements.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice in Family Medicine.
  • Organize and direct the FM Program, including rotations and educational activities at all participating clinical sites, ensuring the quality of didactic and clinical education.
  • Have supervisory authority over all educational tracks in the program.
  • Establish clinical assignments and schedules for residents for the entire academic year by May 1 for the upcoming academic year.
  • Supervise any FM subspecialty training programs sponsored and linked to the core program to ensure compliance with ACGME accreditation standards.
  • Prepare and implement the FM residency curriculum to meet ACGME and national board requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of accreditation and operational requirements, monitoring trends and anticipating changes.
  • Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the FM Program.
  • Submit reports on program, faculty, and resident/fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).
  • Ensure adherence to sponsoring institution and ACGME policies and procedures, including resident duty hours, working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process.
  • Cooperate with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Regional VP (RVP), and hospital administration to ensure effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the FM Program.
  • Articulate a clear operational plan for the residency program and advocate for necessary resources (faculty, facilities, educational services, materials, finances).
  • Ensure resident wellness by fostering an environment of teamwork, cooperation, and caring.
  • Ensure the residency does not place excessive reliance on residents for service over education.
  • Identify qualified subspecialty education coordinators in specified subspecialties.
  • Attend educational programs sponsored by the Association of Program Directors and other education-related activities.
  • Participate on the Consortium Graduate Medical Education Committee and hospital committees as requested.
  • Chair other relevant committees as needed if appointed by RVP.
  • Be available and accessible to residents at primary teaching site(s).
  • Oversee the development of an effective resident advising program and ensure timely and effective feedback.
  • Promote resident scholar activity.
  • Attend teaching conferences as set forth by the sponsoring institution and RVP.
  • Help determine the optimal process for candidate review.
  • Recruit and select candidates for the Program through the National Residency Matching Program in alignment with the RVP and Associate Program Director.
  • Adhere to Consortium and medical center policies.
  • Personally demonstrate scholarly activity through peer-reviewed funding, publications, presentations, etc.
  • Regularly participate in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences to promote inquiry and scholarship.
  • Assure faculty meet research and scholarly activity requirements.
  • Evaluate resident performance in relation to educational objectives and ACGME milestones.
  • Establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with ACGME requirements.
  • Make decisions regarding resident promotion and graduation.
  • Document completion of training and qualifications for each resident.
  • Provide verification of residency education for all residents.
  • Write letters of recommendation or serve as a reference for residents when applicable.
  • Provide accurate statistical and narrative information for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Review Committee.
  • Organize faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program.
  • Evaluate faculty performance in meeting program objectives, including resident satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement programs to enhance faculty knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills.
