About The Position

Under general supervision, the Family Medicine and Primary Care Physician provides direct patient care through walk-in and appointment clinics, diagnoses medical conditions, prescribes treatment, conducts physical examinations, orders and interprets diagnostic tests, performs minor procedures, provides referrals, and supports comprehensive student healthcare services. Provides direct patient care covering the full scope of student health needs in a primary care setting, consisting of walk-in and appointment clinics; includes interviewing patients, diagnosing medical problems, prescribing treatment, counseling patients, conducting physical examinations, referring patients to specialists within and outside the SHC, ordering and interpreting X-Ray and lab tests, and performing related health care duties, and recording and completing case histories and reports. As indicated, performs minor surgery not including general anesthesia. Provides Travel consultations to students, faculty and staff. Coordinates SHC Travel Clinic services and provides consultation to Nursing and Clinicians on Travel Medicine. Participates in SHC committees, QI audit, peer review, and continuing medical education. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a medical school and completion of a residency training program in a primary care field such as family medicine, general internal medicine, gynecology, general pediatrics, emergency medicine, or preventive medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent.
  • A valid State of California license to practice medicine.
  • Current American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) board certification appropriate for the assigned duties.
  • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills in primary care and family medicine.
  • Ability to provide comprehensive care for acute illnesses, injuries, preventive health, and reproductive health needs.
  • Skill in conducting physical examinations and ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic imaging results.
  • Ability to counsel patients effectively and communicate sensitive medical information with professionalism and compassion.
  • Knowledge of appropriate referral practices and ability to coordinate care with specialists, physicians, and public agencies.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to quality improvement, peer review, continuing medical education, and interdisciplinary healthcare initiatives.
