About The Position

Do you love the game of volleyball and want to help others enjoy the game too? Want to positively influence children as they learn the game, develop their skills, practice good sportsmanship, and have fun? You can get back in the game by working as a volleyball referee officiating youth and teen (grades 4 - 12) games in the City's Fall Youth and Teen Sports Program. We are looking for positive, responsible, and dependable individuals who can make sure the rules and spirit of the game are followed, encourage fair play with a focus on fun, and put the safety of all players and spectators first. You must be able to deal with participants, coaches, parents, and spectators in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner and are expected to provide a high level of customer service to recreation program participants. The City's Sports Team is an innovative and collaborative group committed to encouraging exercise through competition, establishing life-long fundamentals of fairness, and promoting recreational opportunities and interests that contribute to the health and well-being of the Gaithersburg community. League plays on Sundays beginning September 13 through mid-November. Staff must attend some preliminary meetings to review department policies and program expectations. Work hours are Sundays, approximately 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; work hours may vary based on the number of registered participants/teams each session and on operational needs, but will generally not exceed an average of 6 to 12 hours per week. Starting hourly rate will be within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Basic volleyball experience and knowledge required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children of various ages, as well as parents and coaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to control all aspects of a volleyball game.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make quick decisions and understand, carry out, and provide written and oral directions.
  • Be in reasonably good physical condition and able to work extended periods of time on your feet.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience officiating volleyball games preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and officiate games for participating youth; enforce rules and ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
  • Ensure players compete in a fair, safe, and encouraging environment.
  • Organize supplies and equipment.
  • Inspect playing surface and/or equipment to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate level of control, fairness, and consistency in all competitive situations; resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy.
  • Attend scheduled training or evaluation sessions.
  • Keep proper records as necessary.
  • Provide excellent service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.
