About The Position

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is a Christian liberal arts university seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track teaching position in mathematics, statistics, or data science within the Department of Mathematical, Information and Computer Sciences (MICS). The department is looking for an individual who excels in teaching, is dedicated to student engagement both inside and outside the classroom, and is interested in contributing to service-learning and undergraduate research initiatives. PLNU emphasizes a vibrant Christian environment, academic excellence, character development, and service as an expression of faith. The MICS department has a strong commitment to quality teaching, fostering Christian community, high-impact academic practices, and collaborative, interdisciplinary work, with existing partnerships in natural sciences, psychology, kinesiology, and business. The department offers various degree programs and is involved in interdisciplinary degrees with the Physics and Engineering department. Responsibilities will commence in August 2027 and include teaching a range of mathematics courses, with academic rank and compensation determined by degrees earned and experience.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science.
  • Evidence of a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Thorough commitment to the concept of Christian liberal arts education and a desire to work in a Christian university.
  • Supportive of the religious and educational goals of the university and its sponsoring denomination.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.
  • Agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach in the area of mathematics and statistics including some general education and service courses.
  • Engage in personal scholarship and scholarship with students (where possible).
  • Advise students academically, spiritually, and professionally.
  • Prepare students for their post graduate career.
  • Help students find who they are called to be.
  • Participate in departmental activities and governance.
  • Work strategically with diverse colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Serve on university faculty committees/working groups and perform other faculty duties.
  • Contribute in preparing students for their post graduate career and finding who they are called to be.
