The Emory Center for Neurodegenerative Disease, in partnership with the Department of Biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine, seeks a basic and/or translational scientist for a tenure-track or tenured faculty appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank. The position is for an investigator applying innovative biochemical, proteomic, imaging, biophysical, or related approaches to fundamental and translational questions in neurodegenerative disease. Particular interest areas include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, while outstanding applicants studying other neurodegenerative disorders are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will bring a strong mechanistic and biochemical perspective to neurodegenerative disease research. Relevant research may involve protein aggregation and proteostasis, protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions, post-translational modifications, cellular and subcellular proteomics, spatially resolved molecular profiling, biomarker and target discovery, structural biology, or innovative imaging and analytical technologies. The department especially welcomes researchers who bridge fundamental biochemistry with approaches that define disease mechanisms in cells, tissues, and human biospecimens. Investigators using human iPSC-derived systems and next-generation disease models—including neuronal and glial models, multicellular systems, organoids, and blood-brain barrier and neurovascular models—to investigate mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets are strongly encouraged to apply. The Emory Center for Neurodegenerative Disease and Department of Biochemistry offer a collaborative research setting and opportunities to work across the School of Medicine and with programs in Neurology, Neuroscience, Human Genetics, Cell Biology, and related disciplines. Faculty have access to infrastructure for proteomics, spatial biology, advanced microscopy and imaging, structural biology, and molecular and cellular biochemistry, including mass spectrometry and cryo-EM, as well as Emory Integrated Core Facilities. Collaboration opportunities also extend across Emory and to Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D. (or equivalent) and have postdoctoral experience in biochemistry, neuroscience, chemical biology, biophysics, proteomics, or a closely related discipline. Selection considers scientific productivity appropriate to career stage, including primary research publications; current or future potential for extramural funding; scientific synergy with the Department of Biochemistry and broader Emory community; and a compelling future research vision. Candidates will also be evaluated on their potential contributions to graduate and postdoctoral education and mentoring. The successful candidate is expected to establish or maintain a dynamic, independent, externally funded research program advancing biochemical and molecular understanding of neurodegenerative disease. Applicants must apply online and submit a single PDF containing a cover letter highlighting qualifications and research interests; a current CV with complete bibliography; names and contact information for three references; a research statement of fewer than three pages describing past accomplishments, including up to three relevant publications, and future research plans; and a statement of fewer than one page describing how lived experiences have informed approaches to mentoring and/or career goals. Position tasks are generally performed in person at an Emory University location. Remote-work-from-home days may be granted at department discretion, and Emory reserves the right to change remote-work status with notice.
