Emory University•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Emory University’s Candler School of Theology invites applications and nominations for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Ethics, with rank open. The successful candidate will hold a PhD or its equivalent in Ethics or a related field by the time of appointment in the fall semester of 2027. Preference will be given to complete applications submitted by October 22, 2026. The successful candidate will build on Candler’s legacy in Christian theological and social ethics and imagine new directions in the field. The school welcomes scholars pursuing innovative and intersectional approaches to moral challenges and possibilities in church, religion, and public life. Potential methods and thematic areas include ethnography, aesthetics, ecology, visual and material culture, technology, AI, health, economics, politics, civil and human rights, and law. The appointee will develop and teach courses in several Candler degree programs, including the MDiv, MTS, MARL, and DMin programs. The candidate will contribute to a broad theological curriculum and situate ethics within larger ecumenical, multi-faith, and global contexts. Teaching will involve a wide range of students in online and in-person modalities, as well as regular faculty rotation in the school’s Contextual Education program. Appointees with a substantial research and publication agenda may apply to participate in the Graduate Division of Religion in Emory University’s Laney Graduate School. Faculty members are also committed to service within the school and in the larger church and community. Candidates must apply through the specified Interfolio application. Applications should include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, writing sample, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Questions may be directed to Susan Reynolds, chair of the search committee.
