About The Position

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital and nestled in a history-rich region of Southern Maryland, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has twice been recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation. The faculty member is responsible for the development, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning. The faculty member is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) to which the faculty member is assigned. Flexibility is required as faculty may be expected to teach classes at varying campus locations, depending on department needs. At a minimum, related activities include instruction, holding office hours, advising and mentoring students, serving on college committees, participating in curriculum and assessment activities, and engaging in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations. The faculty member performs other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean, Vice President for the Division of Learning, or the President or designee. The faculty member will teach 30 credits annually and will schedule, publish, and maintain a minimum of five office hours per week during each semester. The faculty member will participate in professional development opportunities and perform professional service activities based on faculty rank and placement, as set forth in the Faculty Handbook. Primary areas of teaching responsibility include mechanical engineering and related disciplines, including lecture, laboratory, and project-based instruction as assigned. The faculty member may also contribute to industry engagement, transfer partnerships, workforce development initiatives, and program growth activities in support of departmental and institutional goals. The faculty member is responsible to the Department Chair, Math and Engineering Department within the School of STEM and Professional Studies, Division of Learning. Placement in rank is commensurate with background and experience. Professional development and professional service requirements are determined by rank and documented annually on the faculty development plan. College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students. Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
• Relevant industry experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, engineering design, energy systems, engineering consulting, or related technical fields.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing using the English language.
• Read, interpret, and apply written information, policies, technical materials, and instructional content.
• Effectively exchange information with students, colleagues, and community partners through a variety of communication methods.
• Establish and maintain positive and professional working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, and adaptability in a dynamic educational environment.
• Effectively manage multiple responsibilities and meet established deadlines.
• Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, instructional technologies, and common office software applications.
• Travel between campuses and external locations as required to fulfill assigned duties.

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree in related field
• Two years of teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain industry partnerships that support student success, workforce development, internships, experiential learning, and program growth.
• Experience in emerging technologies or specialized areas such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, quantum technologies, automation, robotics, or other disciplines that can enhance engineering program offerings and student opportunities is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop, plan, organize, and teach courses at various times, including day, evening, and weekend offerings.
• Maintain current expertise in assigned disciplines and incorporate relevant developments into instruction.
• Ensure courses include approved curriculum, relevant content, effective pedagogy, and appropriate assessment methods.
• Recommend textbooks, instructional materials, software, equipment, and other learning resources.
• Teach all courses according to approved syllabi and institutional requirements.
• Keep students informed regarding course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
• Provide timely feedback, grading, and maintenance of accurate academic records.
• Submit required reports, records, and documentation in a timely manner.
• Conduct and participate in course and faculty evaluation processes.
• Ensure classes are conducted as scheduled in the approved instructional modality.
• Participate in curriculum development, program review, and student learning outcomes assessment.
• Utilize college-supported instructional technologies and learning management systems.
• Adapt instruction to support diverse student backgrounds, experiences, learning needs, and abilities.
• Foster an inclusive, engaging, and student-centered learning environment.
• Maintain required office hours and provide student support outside of class.
• Participate in professional development activities to maintain disciplinary and pedagogical expertise.
• Develop and maintain relationships with industry, transfer institutions, and professional organizations.
• Maintain a safe instructional and laboratory environment and assist with laboratory and equipment needs, as appropriate.
• Attend faculty, departmental, school, and college meetings and activities.
• Serve on college committees and participate in institutional service activities.
• Perform duties consistent with faculty evaluation standards and institutional expectations.
• Other duties as assigned.
