FT Facilities Technican

Rochester•Rochester, NY

About The Position

Open Door Mission is seeking a dependable, hands-on Facilities Technician to maintain and repair the buildings, equipment, and property that support its programs. This is a building maintenance and repair role, not a cleaning position. The position supports residential, shelter, and office facilities and involves working in occupied buildings around employees, guests, volunteers, and program participants. It calls for sound judgment, respectful communication, flexibility, reliability, and consideration for daily program operations. The workplace is described as relaxed and practical, with clear expectations for professionalism, accountability, and follow-through. The technician takes ownership of assigned work while collaborating with the Director of Facilities, coworkers, volunteers, and program participants. Rotating weekend morning shifts are required; occasional evening work and shared after-hours emergency or on-call responsibilities may also be required.

  • Be a committed Christian who supports Open Door Mission’s mission of restoring hope and changing lives.
  • Have practical building maintenance and repair skills, including safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Hold a current, valid New York State driver’s license and have a driving history acceptable under the organization’s insurance standards.
  • Be able and willing to operate Mission fleet vehicles, which may include a box truck, refrigerated van, pickup truck, and 8- and 12-passenger vans.
  • Be able to use email, review and update electronic work orders, and complete required online training and documentation.
  • Be available for rotating weekend morning shifts, with flexibility for occasional evenings and emergency coverage.
  • Demonstrate dependable attendance, punctuality, and consistent follow-through.
  • Accept supervision and feedback, follow established priorities, and comply with safety and organizational requirements.
  • Work independently, recognize when guidance is needed, and communicate concerns promptly.
  • Interact professionally and courteously with coworkers, donors, volunteers, guests, program participants, and vendors.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and remain calm during unexpected situations.
  • Be able to perform the essential physical duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, and use safe lifting and material-handling practices.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned work orders from start to finish, communicating progress, obstacles, and completion.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs to buildings, furniture, fixtures, appliances, and equipment.
  • Handle general carpentry, remodeling, painting, plumbing, electrical, and lock repairs within the technician’s training and authorization.
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment; identify safety concerns and report needed repairs.
  • Follow department procedures for work assignments, equipment use, safety, and maintenance.
  • Keep work areas safe and orderly and help maintain well-kept grounds.
  • Coordinate work respectfully around program activities and the needs of building occupants.
  • Assist with emergencies such as heating failures, water leaks, and weather-related concerns.
