About The Position

Residence Life at James Madison University is accepting applications for a Facilities Technician. Residence Life is committed to designing and maintaining a caring environment that encourages academic success, respect, personal growth, and responsibility to one’s community. The Facilities Technician reports to the Assistant Director of Business Operations and supports the mission of the Office of Residence Life by providing management of residential facilities for the department. The successful candidate will ensure that the residential environment is safe, clean, well-maintained, and they will provide supervision and guidance to employees. The Facilities Technician will be part of the Residence Life team that serves 6,700 residential students on a campus with 33 residential buildings that is continuing to grow. We are a close-knit department with 35 full-time staff members and over 250 student staff members.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Problem solving/schedule organization
  • Experience with inventory management
  • Experience with inspections and accompanying documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Supervision and/or experience managing/leading a group
  • Forklift experience and operation of larger vehicles

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for Residence Life by managing all residential facilities and assessing needs and conditions
  • Performs regular, detailed inspections of all residential facilities
  • Supervises a team of student staff during the academic year and full-time wage employees during the summer
  • Maintains furniture inventory in all residence halls and in warehouse
  • Serves as primary contact for vendors supplying resources to the residence halls
  • Works closely with external contractors to ensure complete and accurate work to meet departmental and student needs
  • Acts as a liaison with JMU Facilities Management
  • Represents Residence Life on various committees as needed
  • Engages with residential students as needed, to stay attuned to their ever-changing facilities needs
  • Directly supervises a team of student staff members
  • Accumulates a minimum of 10 hours of professional development during each performance evaluation period. Obtains hours by attending university, divisional, and department training. Attends conferences, obtains a certification, or completes other job-related training. Uses professional development opportunities to stay relevant to trends and best practices.
