About The Position

Performs a variety of light maintenance work of City buildings, facilities, and grounds, which may include light landscaping and construction maintenance. Works under the direction of the Engineering Project Manager. May provide direction to temporary or part time workers, volunteers, or community service workers. This is a Non-Exempt position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and a minimum of (1) year’s relatable experience in facilities or construction maintenance.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which ensures the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Valid Oregon State Driver’s License with a clean driving records.
  • Possession of , or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire: Class A CDL Permit
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire: First Aid, CPR, AED Certification.
  • Competent Person Training/Trench Safety
  • Forklift Certification
  • HAZWOPER Training
  • Fall Protection Training
  • Confined space training
  • Bucket truck training
  • Oregon Commercial Driver's License – Class A with tanker endorsement
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical which includes drug screening, and successfully pass the City of Newberg Fit for Duty Testing; job related tests as may be required.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history background check and be able to be CJIS Certified.
  • This position is considered a “First Responder” which may be considered essential personnel. This means that in the event City offices close due to inclement weather, etc., you are still required to report to work for your scheduled shift, as well as any overtime or extra hours required.
  • Knowledge of building systems, including windows, doors, flooring, HVAC, plumbing, sheetrock, painting, dismantling and installing furniture, basic woodworking, replacement of light bulbs.
  • Working knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies used in grounds and facility maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operation with an ability to utilize the computer for record keeping, reports, operation of maintenance programs, and asset management software.
  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems.
  • General knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work safely and to wear task appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with coworkers, other employees, and contract service providers.

Responsibilities

  • Opens and closes, locks and unlocks, and maintains facility security as needed; may serve as point of contact for building occupants and vendors.
  • Arranges and rearranges meeting rooms for and following various City meetings.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various functions and programs, prepares facilities for programs use.
  • Performs spot and emergency custodial work on an as-needed basis as assigned.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled interior and exterior building maintenance and repairs such as painting, floor covering, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, roofing, HVAC, and general carpentry.
  • Conducts routine inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Schedules maintenance work orders, documents and tracks completion.
  • Supports maintenance of facilities records, inventory, and vendor contacts.
  • Tracks invoices, purchase orders, and budget expenditures and ensures they follow the City of Newberg’s policies and procedures.
  • Responds to service requests and emergency repairs in a timely way according to established priorities.
  • Maintains tools, parts inventory, and maintenance logs.
  • Follow safety procedures, lockout/tagout protocols and ensures compliance with codes/standards.
  • Deliver supplies to the various City departments.
  • Provides heavy lifting of items for various departments.
  • Helps with various other small projects, furniture assembly/moves, and general office setup.
  • Maintains the city’s Flag status at the various City of Newberg Flag Poles.
  • Inspects, washes, paints, repairs, and performs routine maintenance of drinking fountains, fountains, trash receptacles, benches, shelters, fences, flagpoles, banners, and other street and outdoor furniture.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs sprinkler systems, sprinkler lines and heads.
  • May perform occasional light landscaping such as seeding, watering and weed control of City grounds.
  • Maintains and adjusts equipment and tools, including blowers, pumps, sprinklers, and facilities vehicles.
  • Operates tractors, mowers, trucks, steam cleaners, pressure washer, buffers, and other listed equipment as needed.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from around buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
  • Performs other duties at the discretion of the Supervisor.
