About The Position

San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and operational support across campus facilities. This role helps maintain safe, reliable, and functional buildings and infrastructure while responding to changing campus maintenance needs.

Requirements

  • Ability to apply working knowledge of multiple building and facilities trades, including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, architectural systems, building systems, and general facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, ladders, carts, vehicles, and other equipment required for journey-level facilities maintenance work.
  • Experience working across multiple facilities trades or coordinating work with multiple trade shops.
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to receive, document, and close assigned work.
  • Experience reading and interpreting drawings, plans, specifications, equipment documentation, and work scopes.
  • Ability and willingness to perform asbestos, lead, mold, or other regulated-materials work if properly trained and assigned.
  • Ability to pass appropriate certification exams related to assigned facilities maintenance duties, if required.
  • Five years of verifiable employment experience performing journey-level facilities maintenance, mechanical maintenance, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, building systems maintenance, construction, renovation, or closely related skilled trade work; technical trade school certification may substitute for one year of work experience preferred.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and corrective maintenance work in a large commercial, institutional, campus, healthcare, government, or multi-building environment preferred
  • technical trade school certification may substitute for one year of work experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, adjustments, lubrication, and component replacement on building systems and equipment.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance and document repairs, deficiencies, labor, materials, and equipment data in the maintenance management system.
  • Identify maintenance needs and perform corrective actions to support preventive maintenance goals.
  • Perform journey-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs involving mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, architectural, and other facility systems.
  • Analyze maintenance problems, complete appropriate repairs, and refer highly specialized work to the appropriate shop or journey-level specialist.
  • Document completed work, materials, conditions, and follow-up needs.
  • Respond to scheduled work, urgent maintenance needs, inspections, events, and changing campus priorities.
  • Evaluate assigned work, perform repairs or mitigation, and escalate specialized issues as needed.
  • Support campus safety, building operations, continuity, and university events.
