About The Position

Performs a variety of tasks in ground and building maintenance at facilities of the school system to enhance appearance. Work involves the responsibility for the safe efficient operation and maintenance of motorized equipment such as backhoes, mowers, edgers, and other types of power equipment. The employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. Employees in this class perform independent tasks in maintenance functions such as replacing glass and windows, replacing tile, making minor carpentry repairs, or providing equipment operation or manual labor for landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks.

Requirements

Working knowledge of methods and techniques used in building or grounds functions assigned.
Working knowledge and operation of the tools and equipment used in the functions assigned.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions of the work and application of all personal protection equipment.
Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform the work.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and understand drawings and diagrams for building or landscape work.
Ability to communicate effectively with school administrators and staff, supervisors, students, employees, and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to operate vehicles safely.
Ability to maintain routine records.
Ability to exercise the physical strength necessary to perform job tasks.
Ability to read and understand service and operation manuals.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles, use measurement devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
Completes some work on-site necessitating being physically able to work off ladders, and lifts, work in crawl spaces, above ceilings and on roofs, etc. under prevailing environmental conditions.
Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise; hazards associated with maintenance and equipment operations, gases, oils, and fumes, and may require the use of a protective mask for safety purposes.
Employee must possess or be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate commercial driver’s license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the department of motor vehicles.
Employees are governed by Gaston County Schools Policy Code(s): 6335/7270/7260, "Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace," which spells out specific drug testing requirements, procedures, and consequences of positive alcohol or drug tests or arrest for alleged violation of any alcohol or drug-related offenses.
If offered a position, the prospective employee must pass a required health exam, criminal records check, and drug test.
As a safety-sensitive position, the employee will be subject to random drug testing.

Nice To Haves

Graduation from high school or equivalent and 1 to 2 years of work experience related to the work assignment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs work in the building or grounds work assigned, such as operating vehicles, mowers, tractors, installing windows and glass, replacing tile, and making minor repairs to bathrooms and other physical facilities.
Requests, maintains, and is responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts, and equipment assigned and that is issued for use.
Maintains the grounds, grass, shrubbery, trees, walkways, steps, and retaining walls of all school properties.
Hauls trash, gravel, and dirt.
Responsible for fertilizing and seeding trees.
Repairs fences; installs drain pipes; installs and repairs gates.
Provides minor maintenance and repair to equipment – mowers, chain saws, power saws, hand tools, weed-eaters and trimmers.
Repairs and maintains playground equipment.
Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
Assists in mass moving efforts to prepare buildings and facilities for school opening.
Backs up other trades and workgroups as needed to get the maintenance and grounds work completed for the school system.
Performs related duties as assigned and required.
