About The Position

Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically-tailored meals, nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. Their team of seventy-five employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. Services are rendered solely on the basis of medical need, with no charge or income qualification. Food & Friends is a nationally-recognized leader of the Food is Medicine movement. The Facilities Director will manage their 24,000 sq ft. facility on approximately 2.5 acres, which features an industrial kitchen, warehouse storage space, and office space. This summer, Food & Friends will embark on a building expansion project that will increase the size of the facility to 41,000 sq ft. The facility welcomes thousands of members of the public, including staff, volunteers, school groups, clients, and donors, each year. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced facilities management professional during a period of transformative expansion.

Requirements

  • at least five years of facilities management experience
  • supervisory experience
  • basic knowledge of key building systems---including HVAC/refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, security system, and fire suppression---allowing for effective collaboration with contractors and technicians
  • skill in managing vendors and negotiating purchases, contracts, and service agreements
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • ability to multitask and accommodate unexpected changes in priority
  • ability to use a computer and basic business software
  • ability to be physically mobile, stand for long periods of time, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Offer of employment contingent upon a background check and pre-employment drug test

Nice To Haves

  • preferably have a BA/BS
  • Experience with commercial kitchens a plus

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all maintenance and upkeep of major building systems, including HVAC/refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, telecommunications, security, fire suppression, diesel emergency generator, and elevator
  • Supervise a Facilities Associate and custodial staff
  • Partner with the Executive Chef to manage maintenance and repair of commercial kitchen equipment
  • Coordinate the bid and proposal process and manage vendor relationships
  • Ensure that the grounds, walkways, and parking lot are well maintained and free of hazards, such as ice and snow
  • Participate in budgeting, insurance procurement, utility management, and ADA/OSHA compliance initiatives
  • Assist staff with minor repairs to desks, chairs, cabinets, computers, and printers
  • Respond to after-hours refrigeration alarm events and emergency maintenance needs
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and owner’s representative on the building expansion project
