About The Position

This temporary internship is part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Gateways Internship Program and is expected to begin May 30, 2027. The appointment is not to exceed August 7, 2027, with the possibility of extension or a new temporary appointment at management’s discretion if organizational needs continue and the intern remains eligible. Interns must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement describing expectations such as duties, appointment length, work schedule, training, and mentorship. Promotion is not permitted during the temporary appointment. Although conversion is not guaranteed, an intern may be converted to a permanent excepted-service position without further competition after completing the educational program, at least 480 hours of career-related work, required training, mentorship, and other participant-agreement requirements. The FAA Student Trainee supports the assigned office’s mission and operations through developmental assignments that provide practical experience, build professional skills, and prepare the student for increasingly complex responsibilities. Interns may work with FAA professionals in disciplines such as aviation safety, engineering, information technology, mathematics, business, finance, economics, human resources, and policy. Assignments help interns understand how these disciplines contribute to the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System, support the aviation industry, and advance the FAA’s mission. Applicants must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, at least half-time in a qualifying educational institution and meet the program’s student eligibility requirements at appointment and throughout the internship. The internship requires reporting to a designated onsite location. Positions may be located in FAA regional offices, centers, or headquarters. Housing is the applicant’s responsibility. Work schedules are determined by management and will not be available until after appointment and onboarding.
