About The Position

The Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) serves as Utah's repository for criminal history records. The Expungement Section is responsible for processing petitioned and automatic expungements, conducting criminal history research, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of criminal history records. This position serves as an expungement technician within the section, responsible for processing petition-based expungements, conducting criminal history research, and providing customer service and assistance related to the expungement process.

Requirements

Proficiency in computer use, including the ability to navigate multiple websites, databases, and software programs simultaneously.
Proficiency with Google Workspaces, including Google Sheets and Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat, and other BCI-related software systems.
Working knowledge of Utah criminal history records, expungement laws, administrative rules, and BCI policies, or the ability to learn and apply this information effectively.
Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and interpret criminal history records, court documents, and other legal documentation.
Ability to apply statutes, administrative rules, court orders, and established procedures to individual cases.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when reviewing criminal history information and processing expungement cases.
Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify discrepancies and determine appropriate next steps.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with petitioners, attorneys, courts, law enforcement agencies, coworkers, and other stakeholders.
Strong customer service skills and the ability to remain professional when handling difficult or sensitive customer interactions.
Ability to explain expungement procedures and requirements clearly to individuals who may have limited knowledge of the process.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet established deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Responsibilities

Processing petition-based expungement applications, including reviewing applications, court documents, criminal history records, and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy.
Conducting criminal history research using BCI systems, court records, and other available databases to identify and evaluate records relevant to expungement eligibility.
Reviewing and interpreting Utah statutes, administrative rules, court orders, and BCI policies as they relate to petition-based expungements.
Making accurate determinations regarding expungement applications based on applicable laws, rules, court orders, and established BCI procedures.
Identifying discrepancies, incomplete information, or issues within criminal history records and taking appropriate action to resolve or escalate them.
Communicating with petitioners, attorneys, courts, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders regarding expungement applications, required documentation, processing status, and general expungement procedures.
Providing professional and accurate customer service by phone, email, in person, and through other available communication methods.
Responding to customer questions and concerns regarding the expungement process while maintaining confidentiality and protecting sensitive criminal history information.
Staying current on changes to Utah statutes, administrative rules, court procedures, BCI policies, and expungement processes that affect assigned work.
Maintaining the highest level of discretion, professionalism, accuracy, and confidentiality while handling sensitive criminal history information and serving the public.
