Expert Product Engineer

HP•Corvallis, OR

About The Position

This is an expert-level Product Engineering position within HP’s imaging and printing business, in the Microfluidic Platform Development Organization (MPD). HP print technology combines complex design constraints, materials, and extensive product testing and qualification to deliver high-quality products and excellent end-user performance. The work involves interactions among polymers, ceramics, metals, elastomers, multilayer films, and electronics through mechanical, fluidic, electrical, adhesion, thermal, and chemical manufacturing processes. The product engineer monitors these processes to ensure product requirements are met or exceeded and applies advanced thermal inkjet (TIJ) knowledge to resolve complex business issues. The role leads worldwide product engineering teams and cross-functional work across new product introduction (NPI), research and development, manufacturing, factories, and partner organizations. It focuses on product and process requirements, test-method development, risk reduction, design for manufacturability, qualification, issue resolution, product quality, and transfers to high-volume factories. The position also provides technical leadership and mentoring, and manages product investigations and qualification frameworks for changes to released products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering.
  • 10 or more years of experience in product engineering or similar engineering activities, such as Systems Interactions Engineering or Writing Systems Engineering; comparable demonstrated capability or qualification may also be considered.
  • Ability to work across organizations and use influence to ensure decisions are centered on customer quality.
  • Ability to work with a team of product engineers to drive toward shared objectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Solid understanding of physics and core engineering materials.
  • Ability to contribute broadly and lead in a fast-paced industrial R&D environment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to give clear, effective presentations to inform and persuade peers and managers.
  • Experience with CREO 3D/2D.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams to understand customer product and manufacturing process requirements; manage projects with multiple workstreams and deliverables and communicate goals, objectives, timelines, budgets, risks, and costs.
  • Lead a worldwide product engineering team, in collaboration with R&D, to develop and characterize test methods that minimize or eliminate risk and verify products meet end-customer requirements.
  • Lead development of solution designs, validation methodologies, tooling, and testing.
  • Provide TIJ domain-specific expertise and leadership to cross-organization projects, programs, and activities to reduce risk and deliver program and business outcomes.
  • Analyze technical problems, evaluate possible solutions using experience and judgment, explain business trade-offs to stakeholders, and recommend a path forward.
  • Drive evaluation and review of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Lead Development Effectiveness in new product development to reduce launch risk.
  • Use design-of-experiments (DOE) characterization results to refine product-to-process specifications, accounting for material, process, and other variations to ensure a shippable product.
  • Lead cross-functional root-cause evaluation and issue resolution in prototype and production, using TIJ knowledge to triage parts and determine causes of failure.
  • Serve as the key final-assembly focal point supporting the Fab, equipment and tooling design teams, product engineering, and printer teams to ensure end-to-end quality.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Lead worldwide product engineering teams in documenting, reporting, and communicating product quality requirements.
  • Work with worldwide product engineering teams and manufacturing partners on margin studies to establish a clear path to stability.
  • Partner with other organizations on investigations and escalations for released products, including leading escalations affecting multiple workstreams.
  • Manage and develop a framework for qualifying changes to released products.
  • Understand part-tracking data connectivity within and across factories; work with IT partners to ensure end-to-end connectivity and operationally correct retrieval as materials, parts, and assemblies move between factories.
  • Drive worldwide teams to capture critical knowledge.
  • Drive transfer activities to high-volume factories.
  • Work on complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of multiple factors.
