About The Position

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is seeking an Exotic Animal Veterinarian for a Full-Time or Part-Time Faculty, Open Rank position. The successful candidate will provide high-quality medical and surgical care for zoological companion animal patients and contribute to the development of a modern academic Zoo & Exotics Service. Initial responsibilities will focus on clinical service development, curriculum design, learner preparation, and hospital operations. As the DVM program matures, the role will evolve to include structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student participation in approximately two years. The university is looking for clinicians with outstanding medical and surgical expertise, excellent communication skills, adaptability, and a passion for collaborative practice and veterinary education. This role is ideal for veterinarians who thrive in hands-on clinical practice, enjoy working with a diverse range of zoological companion animal species (particularly small mammals and birds), value excellence in teaching and mentorship, enjoy collaborating with specialists, are energized by innovation and building new programs, and want to help shape the future of veterinary education. Faculty joining during SSVM's startup phase will play a foundational role in developing pre-clinical exotic animal curriculum, establishing clinical workflows and service identity, and preparing for formal clinical teaching.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Demonstrated expertise in exotic animal medicine and surgery
  • Strong clinical focus in small mammal companion animal and/or avian species
  • Eligible for licensure in the State of New Jersey
  • Interest in teaching and academic program development
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable working in a startup environment
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive veterinary care for exotic animal patients.
  • Manage exotic animal intakes, diagnostics, procedures, and inpatient care.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of pre‑clinical didactic content in exotic animal medicine and surgery.
  • Coordinate and support hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for clinical training.
  • Teach and supervise DVM students, interns, and residents as clinical teaching begins.
  • Collaborate with specialty and hospital services to support integrated patient care.
  • Participate actively in service development, SOPs, workflow design, and teaching hospital planning.
