About The Position

The Exhibits Technician role supports exhibit work across OMSI's exhibits project portfolio, which includes exhibit sales, traveling exhibits, featured and temporary exhibitions, permanent exhibitions, 5-year initiatives and a broad range of OMSI projects. The Exhibits Technician applies their varied fabrication knowledge and skills towards the prototyping, fabrication, remediation, and production of a variety of exhibit components in support of delivering high quality, interactive exhibits and experiences. This position may support exhibit technology and software needs.

  • Ability to conduct basic assembly and installation of exhibit components.
  • Ability to safely transport exhibit materials using forklift and scissor lifts.
  • Ability to perform general gallery cleanup.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, repairs, and refurbishes exhibits, components and experiences using various types of wood, plastics, fabrics, metal, electronics, and finishes.
  • Sets up, operates, and maintains shop tools and hand tools used in the production of exhibits while maintaining a high degree of safety.
  • Resolves mechanical and technical problems for exhibits.
  • Documents and tracks project-related activities, with an emphasis on adhering to timeline and budget constraints.
  • Continually and consistently meets the high quality of build and finish expected by the Exhibits department and OMSI.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance and cleaning of permanent and temporary exhibits, to ensure that all exhibits are kept fully operational.
  • Advises additional preventive maintenance steps that should be adopted to prolong exhibit integrity and lifespan.
  • Conducts electro-mechanical repairs and maintenance upgrades of OMSI's permanent and temporary exhibits, in collaboration and consultation with Exhibits team.
  • Conducts regular exhibit diagnostic checks and identifies/proposes appropriate solutions and escalates areas of concern as needed.
  • Assists with the staging and receiving processes for exhibit freight, as well as unloading and unpacking carts and crates.
  • Conducts basic assembly and installation of exhibit components, under the guidance of the exhibit installation/deinstallation co-leads and external exhibit technicians.
  • Safely transports exhibit materials into and out of freight trucks and from exhibit warehouse to gallery spaces, using forklift and scissor lifts.
  • Provides general gallery cleanup such as vacuuming, cleaning walls, and wiping down of exhibits.
