About The Position

The Exhibit Operations Lead supports exhibit work across OMSI's exhibits portfolio, which includes exhibit sales, traveling exhibits, featured and temporary exhibitions, permanent exhibitions, 5-year initiatives and a broad range of OMSI projects. This is a hands-on position, working closely with the Exhibits Manager and Logistics and Operations Manager to support daily operations of exhibits, guide and assign tasks and be a resource to Exhibit Technicians. This role is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of OMSI exhibits, ensuring they are operating safely and reliably through routine exhibit repair, maintenance and troubleshooting to improve the guest experience. Additionally, they provide support for exhibit changeovers and material transfers. They work with a wide variety of electromechanical systems, with an emphasis on maintenance, remediation, troubleshooting, and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the work of Exhibit Technicians and other staff to safely move, install and de-install exhibits and related components.
  • Provides technical and specialized exhibit support for OMSI's exhibits portfolio as needed.
  • Purchases items and parts to keep OMSI's exhibits stocked with engagement materials.
  • Responds to radio requests for exhibit manipulative component replacements and consumable materials replenishment.
  • Conducts exhibit walkthroughs to confirm operational exhibits.
  • Provides troubleshooting for non-operational exhibits and communicates exhibit conditions with colleagues for advanced troubleshooting solutions.
  • Works with cross-functional teams to coordinate and execute the movement of exhibits, temporary walls, and components throughout OMSI.
  • Documents and tracks project-related activities, with an emphasis on adhering to timeline and budget constraints.
  • Conducts regular exhibit diagnostic checks and identifies/proposes appropriate solutions.
  • Conducts electronic and mechanical repairs and maintenance upgrades of OMSI's permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Fabricates, repairs and refurbishes interactive exhibits and experiences using various types of wood, plastics, fabrics, metal, electronics, and finishes.
  • Sets up, operates, and maintains shop tools and hand tools used in the production of exhibits while maintaining a high degree of safety.
  • Researches and advises on best parts and materials for repairing OMSI's permanent museum components and interactives.
  • Communicates with designers and technical personnel to resolve technical, mechanically-related and materials-related problems in exhibit design.
  • Works with the Exhibits leadership in developing and managing vendor relationships for exhibit remediation.
  • Continually and consistently meets the high quality of build and finish expected by the Exhibits department and OMSI.
  • Champions safety protocols and OSHA compliance in work areas.
  • Conducts regular maintenance and troubleshooting of shop space and equipment.
  • Maintains workshop organization and cleanliness.
