About The Position

The International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, focuses on the relationship between humans and horses throughout world history. We seek qualified applicants for the position of Exhibition Specialist. Ideal candidates have experience in exhibit fabrication and maintenance, as well as planning and design. Candidates are collaborative and possess excellent communication, critical thinking, problem solving, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years of professional experience in museum exhibit production and fabrication, set design, or other relevant experience
  • Previous experience of museum exhibits and object handling
  • Knowledge of museum standards and best practices, security, lighting, and ADA regulations
  • Driver’s License
  • Proficiency with principles, techniques, tools, and equipment used in designing, fabricating, and installing museum exhibits

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or completion of vocational or trade school in relevant field
  • five+ years preferred experience
  • Knowledge of electrical and, or, audio-visual technologies

Responsibilities

  • Fabrication with hand and power tools, using a variety of materials including but not limited to wood, metal, acrylic, fabric, and foam
  • Fabricate exhibit structures, scenery, cases, mounts, and interactive and educational materials
  • Print and mount panels and signage
  • Install exhibit structures, cases, mounts, barriers, lighting, panels, and signage
  • Maintain exhibit spaces including but not limited to repairs, paint, flooring, and space dividers
  • Maintain work areas, tools, equipment, and exhibit structures, cases, and mounts
  • Routine exhibit inspections: clean and repair as necessary, and identify future needs
  • Maintain exhibit lighting and lighting storage
  • Exhibit content, layout, and design
  • Schedules for exhibits, rotating objects, and temporary displays
  • Estimate exhibit costs and track expenses
  • Order materials and supplies
  • Adherence to the KHP and Museum missions and policies
  • Practice proper and safe object handling, including moving, packing, unpacking, installing, and de- installing, and Assisting with object photography, transportation, and storage
  • Professional development and staying current with museum best practices and procedures
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Other duties as assigned
