About The Position

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is hiring an Exhibit Technician II to join their Creative Tech team. This is a hands-on role responsible for maintaining exhibits, designing and building new ones, and troubleshooting issues on the floor. The work is technical, varied, and visible, with millions of guests interacting with the exhibits. The technician will work with a small, collaborative team that values respect, professionalism, communication, and follow-through. The team is expanding its capacity for larger projects.

Requirements

  • 2 years’ experience with diagnosing and resolving mechanical and electronic issues.
  • 2 years’ experience with electric-mechanical components, computer hardware and software.
  • 2 years’ experience operating hand and power tools in a commercial/industrial environment.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years programming and working with microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, or similar).
  • 3+ years working with automation systems (Q-Sys, Crestron, AMX, or similar).
  • Experience programming lighting control systems (Paradigm, Mosaic, or comparable platforms).
  • Experience with networked audio DSP platforms (Biamp Tesira, Q-Sys, Dante or similar).
  • A systematic troubleshooter who can work through an unfamiliar problem and explain their reasoning.
  • Ability to communicate knowledge clearly to teammates, colleagues, and others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with outside vendors and contractors to ensure deliverables are clearly defined and understood.
  • Ability to bring people along and share knowledge; teaching and documentation are part of the job.
  • Backgrounds in theater technology, live sound engineering, AV engineering, or maker/hacker experience with electronics are relevant.
  • Experience in hands-on technical trades with self-taught skills.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot electro-mechanical exhibits, microcontroller and PC based interactives, AV and lighting systems, and other technical issues.
  • Build new interactive exhibits from concept and prototyping through installation and documentation.
  • Maintain the technology in galleries and venues, including touchscreens, projectors, and laser show systems.
  • Collaborate with curators, educators, exhibit designers, fabricators, and contractors to bring exhibit ideas to life.
