On-Call Exhibit Support Technician I
About The Position
The Exploratorium Exhibits group develops, designs, engineers, and produces interactive exhibits, architectural elements, and visitor experiences for its San Francisco Bay museum, local community, and partner organizations around the world. Exhibit Support Technicians assist with maintaining and rebuilding existing exhibits and, as time allows, help construct new exhibits and refurbish current ones. Most work takes place with floor support and exhibit development project teams and requires collaboration. The position reports to the Director of Exhibit Production. This is an on-call, non-exempt, non-union position based in San Francisco, California. Staff are expected to work onsite a certain number of days per week based on department requirements. The position does not include benefits. Applicants must submit a cover letter; applications without one will not be considered. The position is open until filled.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience in related work; shop experience is preferred.
- Basic skills in one or more of the following areas: electrical, metal, wood, or plastic fabrication.
- Basic understanding of scientific and engineering principles.
- Ability to self-pace and handle multiple tasks under noisy and chaotic conditions.
- Ability to move from place to place, twist, bend, stretch, kneel, reach, grasp, and climb a ladder.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds for short distances.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Technicians, Exhibit Developers, Gallery Technicians, Project Directors, and Project Managers on exhibit maintenance and refurbishment.
- Provide general construction support for temporary exhibitions and floor installations, including mounting and striking shows, constructing props and accessories, and assisting with exhibit relocations.
- Help maintain shop safety and serviceability by cleaning work areas, cleaning and servicing equipment, stocking racks, and performing other shop maintenance tasks.
- Provide other assistance as needed.
- Complete assignments in a timely and professional manner.
