About The Position

The Society for Science, a nonprofit organization with over 100 years of history in promoting scientific literacy and understanding, is seeking an Executive Editor to lead its Science News Media Group (SNMG). This role requires a visionary journalist with strong analytical and interpersonal skills, capable of leading innovation in a fast-paced news environment. The Executive Editor will be responsible for shaping the future of the news organization, ensuring accurate and engaging science, medicine, and technology reporting. The position involves overseeing daily news operations, coordinating editorial coverage across platforms, managing staff, developing special projects, and aligning editorial and business goals to support revenue targets. The ideal candidate will foster collaboration, maintain high standards of accuracy and integrity, and drive the mission of connecting the public with reliable science news.

Requirements

  • 10 years or more of leadership experience in a news organization.
  • 7 years or more in digital media publishing.
  • Substantial experience developing and editing multiple products and storyforms, including news, features, and multimedia.
  • Proven management/leadership track record.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Direct experience in change management.
  • Experience covering science, medicine, and technology, or a strong interest/knowledge of the fields.
  • Editorial strategy.
  • Content strategy and implementation.
  • Excellent editorial judgment, writing/editing skills.
  • Understanding of digital media, visual journalism, and multimedia, including emerging trends.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in an extremely fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient at interpreting data and providing actionable recommendations based on learnings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically with an entrepreneurial and inventive approach to problem-solving.
  • A commitment to the importance of quality journalism and public understanding of science.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to develop rapport with colleagues and external clients.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Supervisory Responsibility: Managers, supervisors, and other staff members as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Direct news coverage on multiple platforms, including print, digital, video, multimedia, and social media.
  • Set short- and long-term content goals and lead the newsroom in achieving them.
  • Edit print, digital, and multimedia stories, ensuring content is inclusive and reflective of diverse audiences.
  • Identify and implement innovative approaches to journalism and storytelling that engage audiences with distinctive, high-value content.
  • Establish an editorial strategy aligned with the SNMG mission, audience growth, and loyalty goals.
  • Oversee the implementation of the editorial strategy.
  • Ensure content engages audiences on their preferred platforms and products.
  • Supervise managers and other staff members as appropriate.
  • Leverage content alignment across subject verticals and properties (Science News, Science News Explores, Science News Learning).
  • Support the editor in chief and publisher on funding proposals and reporting to funders.
  • Support the publisher and business team in developing business strategies and products.
  • Uphold exacting standards of accuracy, integrity, and transparency.
  • Identify opportunities to innovate around the mission.

Benefits

  • The salary range is $143,428 – $161,356.
