About The Position

Stringfellow Management Group, an Etherio Company, is seeking a full-time Executive Director to support their client, the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). The Executive Director will serve as IAAI's chief operating officer and top staff executive, leading a team of eleven members. This role involves working in partnership with the Board and Executive Committee to translate the Association's mission and strategic priorities into tangible results. The Executive Director will be responsible for leading staff, supporting volunteer leaders, enhancing member value, and representing IAAI within the fire investigation community and beyond. The company is a collaborative, largely remote team that values initiative, continuous improvement, accountability, and excellent customer service, offering significant autonomy to team members while fostering close collaboration to support multiple national associations. Requirements

  • 7–10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience, preferably in an association, nonprofit, or membership organization.
  • Experience working with a volunteer Board and volunteer leaders.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit governance, including the line between Board governance and staff management.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial analysis, and resource allocation (direct accounting experience not required).
  • A record of developing and executing strategic plans and leading staff.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and public-speaking skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, navigate complex issues, and respond effectively to crises.
  • Success building partnerships and pursuing grant or other funding opportunities.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and executive experience.
  • Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential.
  • Experience leading an organization through strategic growth or significant transformation.
  • Experience in a technical or professional organization involving education, credentialing, and subject-matter-expert volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as principal staff advisor to the Board, Executive Committee, and President, implementing Board-approved policies and strategy while maintaining clear governance and management boundaries.
  • Attend monthly virtual Board meetings (Saturday from 10-noon eastern) and two in-person Board meetings annually.
  • Translate the Strategic Plan into measurable goals, track results, and guide the organization through change and initiatives, including responsible adoption of emerging technologies.
  • Lead a high-performing, collaborative team with clear expectations and accountability.
  • Develop the budget, monitor financial health, maintain strong controls, and identify opportunities for revenue growth through membership, education, conferences, sponsorships, and grants, working with the Board, Treasurer, finance staff, auditors, and professional advisors.
  • Lead organizational strategies to strengthen member engagement and retention.
  • Provide executive leadership and operational oversight for the Association’s education, training, certification, conferences, and publications, and support the volunteer experts behind them.
  • Lead the government relations strategy with the Government Relations Committee (preserving 501(c)(3) status), and build partnerships with government relations agencies, professionals, partners, and allied organizations.
  • Serve as a spokesperson, protect the Association's reputation and the integrity of its credentials, and promote its mission.
  • Develop communication strategies that increase awareness of IAAI and strengthen its reputation through professional, transparent, and ethical communication.
  • Maintain strong relationships with IAAI chapters and international members, providing organizational support to chapters and identifying opportunities to strengthen IAAI’s global presence.
  • Oversee legal, ethical, cybersecurity, and operational compliance, insurance, and crisis preparedness.
  • Evaluate and implement appropriate emerging technologies that improve organizational efficiency, including responsible application of artificial intelligence.
  • Establish appropriate performance indicators, regularly evaluate results, and lead organizational change to improve effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, and member value.
