About The Position

The YMCA OF METROPOLITAN LOS ANGELES is seeking an Executive Director to oversee the total operation of a YMCA Center. The LA Y is dedicated to building stronger communities by providing equitable programs and services. This role involves managing membership, marketing, programs, facilities, staff and volunteer development, financial development, and community relations. The Executive Director will align the work of staff and volunteers with the Center's strategy, establish an annual operating plan, and ensure the effective operation of the facility and all program activities. This position requires identifying and correcting under-performing areas, representing the YMCA in the local community, and developing positive working relationships with external entities. The role also includes directing financial development activities, achieving fundraising goals, and supporting a long-range capital development plan. Additionally, the Executive Director will oversee staff hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation, as well as manage and monitor the Center's operating budget. Developing high-quality member engagement strategies, serving as staff officer to the Center Board of Managers, and fostering innovation in program development are key responsibilities. The position also involves ensuring the safety and maintenance of facilities, directing marketing efforts, and upholding YMCA policies and values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business, or equivalent.
  • Ten or more years of executive management experience in multi-site operations, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Proven experience securing large-scale capital development donations for multi-year building projects or facility renovations.
  • Proven track record of directly building, monitoring, and scaling operational budgets or revenue portfolios of $8 million or more.
  • Proven track record of managing, stewarding, and developing a fundraising portfolio of $1 million or more.
  • Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement.
  • Ability to recruit top community leaders.
  • Ability to direct total operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of Center budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  • Physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Align the work of staff and volunteers to the Center and Association’s Center for Community Well-Being strategy framework.
  • Establish and implement an annual operating plan, including goals, timelines, and expected results, in collaboration with staff, volunteers, and metropolitan management.
  • Effectively operate the facility and all program activities, managing the facility on a daily basis and ensuring smooth operation of activities and programs.
  • Establish appropriate management tracking methods to ensure effective performance in all key areas.
  • Identify and correct areas in which the Center is under-performing, organizing task forces as necessary.
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  • Develop, maintain, and model collaborative relationships with community agencies in the service delivery area.
  • Direct the financial development activities of the Center and achieve fundraising goals.
  • Develop and support a year-round fundraising program, including the annual current support campaign, donor acquisition, stewardship, special events, planned giving, and capital gifts.
  • Support and engage in a structured major donor cultivation strategy to secure a minimum number of major gifts annually.
  • Develop and support a long-range capital development plan, including needs and sources of funds, to maintain facilities.
  • Build the Center endowment by increasing the number of members making irrevocable gift commitments.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff, including recruiting and hiring using screening tools and panel interviews.
  • Ensure staff members have development plans and that training funding is allocated and used appropriately.
  • Identify career candidates and work on an active plan to support their development and advancement.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the Center operating budget, ensuring budget targets are met or exceeded.
  • Direct Center strategic planning efforts and develop the annual operating plan.
  • Develop and control long and short-term budgets to support the strategic plan, ensuring adequate cash balances and net assets.
  • Develop and direct high-quality relationship-based member engagement strategies, modeling relationship-building skills.
  • Serve as staff officer to the Center Board of Managers, ensuring a satisfying board experience and leading board development efforts.
  • Ensure each committee has appropriate staff leadership, benchmarks, and charts of work aligned with the strategic plan.
  • Enable board participation in strategic plan implementation by providing progress monitoring information.
  • Facilitate the ongoing evaluation of the Board's effectiveness and performance.
  • Foster a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs that support the Y mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensure the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Direct Center marketing and communication efforts to effectively communicate benefits to the community.
  • Serve as a member of Y management and support the overall objectives of the YMCA.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
