About The Position

We are seeking an Executive Director of the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) to provide visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for the Whiting School of Engineering’s flagship outreach enterprise. This role is responsible for advancing the Center’s mission to expand access to K-12 STEM education and pathways, with a strong emphasis on sustained engagement with Baltimore City communities and schools. The Executive Director is responsible for strengthening community partnerships, securing philanthropic support, and leading a high-performing team to deliver impactful, evidence-based programming. The Executive Director will set and execute a bold, forward-looking vision for the Center that aligns with institutional priorities and emerging trends in STEM education.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in a STEM field, education, sociology or related discipline.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible leadership experience in education, nonprofit, higher education, or related sectors.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD or terminal Degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, including securing major gifts and/or competitive grants.
  • Experience managing teams, budgets, and complex operations.
  • Experience working with Baltimore City Schools or similar school systems.
  • Track record of building and sustaining community-based partnerships.
  • Experience promoting, disseminating and scaling STEM education innovations.
  • Experience navigating higher education environments and working with faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Build, sustain, and deepen authentic, reciprocal partnerships with Baltimore City Public Schools, community-based organizations, local and national stakeholders.
  • Ensure programming reflects community needs and is grounded in principled, relationship-based engagement.
  • Ensure the design, delivery, and dissemination of high-quality, evidence-based STEM programs for K–12 students and educators.
  • Strengthen the integration of research, evaluation, and data to demonstrate impact, promote innovations, and inform continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and scale signature programs while identifying opportunities for innovation and expansion beyond Baltimore City.
  • Partner with faculty to integrate outreach into research and educational initiatives, including grant proposals.
  • Lead, manage, and develop a diverse team of professionals, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture.
  • Address organizational structure, workload equity, and staffing models to support sustainable growth.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the Center, including budgeting, financial management, compliance, and reporting.
  • Ensure efficient and effective systems, processes, and infrastructure to support program delivery.
  • Work with our office of Development and Alumni Relations to secure philanthropic support from foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
  • Lead and support the development of competitive federal, state, and private grant proposals in partnership with faculty and staff.
  • Partner with university marketing and communications teams to elevate the Center’s visibility and fundraising outcomes.
  • Anticipate shifts in policy, funding, and educational landscapes and proactively position the Center for long-term relevance and growth.
