About The Position

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for U.S.-based insurance professionals with direct underwriting experience in the Excess & Specialty Insurance market, especially SME and commercial accounts, risk selection, pricing, coverage structuring, and portfolio management. This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on specialty insurance underwriting review, SME/commercial risk analysis, underwriting scenario evaluation, domain-specific deliverable creation, peer review, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will apply their underwriting expertise to assess realistic insurance scenarios and provide structured input grounded in real market experience.

Requirements

  • Current location in the United States
  • 3+ years of experience in Excess & Specialty Insurance underwriting, with 5+ years preferred
  • Direct experience underwriting SME or commercial risks
  • Strong understanding of risk selection, pricing, coverage structuring, portfolio management, and market appetite
  • Experience at specialty carriers, MGAs, wholesale brokers, E&S platforms, or similar insurance organizations
  • Ability to evaluate underwriting scenarios with practical market judgment
  • Strong written communication skills and ability to provide clear technical feedback
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, project-based environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in excess casualty, professional liability, management liability, cyber, environmental, excess property, E&S general liability, construction, or transportation specialty risks
  • Experience reviewing submissions, loss runs, exposure data, coverage forms, pricing indications, underwriting guidelines, or broker materials
  • Experience with portfolio review, risk appetite decisions, account-level underwriting, or specialty market placement
  • Background at leading specialty carriers, MGAs, wholesale brokers, or E&S-focused platforms
  • Availability for an initial short-term pilot with potential follow-on work
  • Academic backgrounds in insurance, risk management, finance, business, economics, law, accounting, or related fields may be relevant
  • Insurance designations or training such as CPCU, AU, ARM, RPLU, AINS, or comparable credentials may be helpful depending on project scope

Responsibilities

  • Review scenarios involving SME and commercial risks in the Excess & Specialty Insurance market
  • Assess risk selection, pricing logic, coverage structure, underwriting assumptions, and portfolio implications
  • Apply real-world underwriting judgment to evaluate whether outputs are commercially realistic and technically sound
  • Identify gaps in risk analysis, pricing rationale, coverage reasoning, or market-specific judgment
  • Evaluate materials involving specialty insurance lines such as excess casualty, professional liability, management liability, cyber, environmental, excess property, E&S general liability, construction, or transportation specialty risks
  • Review underwriting scenarios involving submissions, exposures, account characteristics, coverage terms, and market appetite
  • Assess whether recommendations align with specialty underwriting standards and commercial risk considerations
  • Provide subject-matter feedback based on direct experience with SME/commercial underwriting
  • Create professional deliverables related to common requests within specialty insurance underwriting
  • Review peer-developed deliverables for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and practical relevance
  • Provide clear written feedback that improves technical quality and underwriting realism
  • Maintain consistent review standards across submitted materials
