Firearms & Tool Mark Examiner The Greensboro Police Department is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Firearms & Tool Mark Examiner to join its accredited Forensic Services Division. This position plays a critical role in supporting criminal investigations through the scientific examination, comparison, and evaluation of firearms, ammunition, tool marks, and related forensic evidence. The successful candidate will utilize advanced forensic methodologies and technologies to analyze evidence, prepare comprehensive reports, provide expert courtroom testimony, and support law enforcement partners throughout the investigative process. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree, with 1+ years of experience in conducting firearms and tool mark examinations casework (e.g., microscopic comparison examinations, caliber determination, number restoration, firearm functionality, and trigger-pull analysis).
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Current certification through the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) ("OR" the ability to obtain within 1 year of eligibility)
  • Requires exceptional analytical, scientific reasoning, technical writing, and communication skills
  • Must obtain Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) Certification within one year of eligibility
  • Required to maintain AFTE certification and successfully complete ongoing proficiency testing in accordance with accreditation requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification through the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE)
  • Experience as a full-time Firearms & Tool Mark Examiner in an ISO/IEC 17020 or 17025 accredited laboratory
  • Experience as a NIBIN Operator authorized to perform acquisitions and correlations.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, compare, evaluate, and document firearms, ammunition, fired ammunition components, tool marks, clothing, and related forensic evidence.
  • Conduct firearm safety and functionality assessments, test firing, serial number restorations, trace metal testing, projectile trajectory analysis, shooting scene reconstructions, and IBIS-NIBIN acquisitions and correlations.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, diagrams, and evidentiary documentation and provide expert testimony in District, State, and Federal Courts.
  • Provide technical consultation and investigative support to law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and partner agencies.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation standards, quality assurance requirements, proficiency testing, and applicable forensic best practices.
  • Mentor and train new examiners, assist with the development and revision of technical procedures and policies, and support continuous improvement initiatives within the section.
  • Participate in community engagement activities, educational outreach efforts, and respond to after-hours investigative callouts when required.
